『「ビー」って呼んでね！』ベアトリチェステファネーリに聞いてみた！

デイブ・ココ（以下ココ）：
横浜グリッツを知ったきっかけは？

ベアトリチェステファネーリ（以下ビー）：
ある日、友達に「もう1年以上ホッケーの試合を生で見ていないから、禁断症状が出てる」と愚痴をこぼしていたんです。
すると友達が「マジか？君が住んでる横浜にチームがあるのに？」って驚いた反応して。
それでグリッツを知ったんです！

ココ：
歴代で一番好きな横浜グリッツの選手は誰ですか？
また、その選手のどんな瞬間や特徴が印象に残っていますか？

ビー：
ロックウェルとラウターも大好きですが、やはり松金選手ですね。
このリーグではあまり見かけないフィジカルなプレースタイルが本当に素晴らしいと思います。
攻守両面で活躍できる選手です。

 

ココ：
生で観戦したグリッツの試合で一番印象に残っているのは？

ビー：
間違いなく、ロッキー（ロックウェルの愛称）がフリーブレード戦で初ゴールを決めた試合です。

 

ココ：
好きな日本のスポーツチームは？

ビー：
横浜に住んでいるので、もちろんベイスターズの大ファンです。
女子ホッケーでは、軽井沢フェアリーズが好きです。

 

ココ：
好きなNHLチームは？

ビー：
アナハイム・ダックス！
プレーオフの時は、髪をプラムとジェイドグリーンに染めていました。

 

ココ：
今一番好きなNHL選手は？

ビー：
アナハイム・ダックスでは、ルカッシュ・ドスタル選手が一番好きです。
調子の波こそあるものの、ギブソン選手がトレードされる前からずっとドスタル選手を応援しています。

 

ココ：
歴代で一番好きなNHL選手は？

ビー：
トレバー・ジグラス選手は、アメリカ代表育成チームにいた頃から応援しています。
フィラデルフィアにトレードされた時は、本当にショックでした。

 

ココ：
日本以外で好きなスポーツチームは？

ビー：
SHLのHV71、DELのアドラー・マンハイム、DEL2のデュッセルドルフEG、NAHLのメリーランド・ブラックベアーズ、AHLのサンディエゴ・ガルズ。あと、ボルチモア・オリオールズも好きです。

 

ココ：
これまで観戦した試合の中で、一番印象に残っている試合（生観でもテレビでも）と、その理由は？

ビー：
ベガス・ゴールデンナイツ対トロント・メープルリーフスの試合で、フレリーが文字通りゴール前を飛び越えてあの信じられないセーブをしたのを観戦していました。

ゴールが決まったと思って、当時の彼氏に慰めの声をかけようとした時、大型スクリーンでリプレイが流れたのを覚えています。
あの瞬間は忘れたくてもできません。

 

ココ：
過去の歴史的なホッケーの試合を観戦できるとしたら、どの試合を選びますか？

ビー：
2003年6月7日、アナハイム・マイティダックス対ニュージャージー・デビルズ。
コートから飛び出して、ボードに刻まれたゴール。

 

ココ：
横浜グリッツで、もっと注目されるべきだと思う、過小評価されている選手は誰ですか？

ビー：
斎藤選手です。

 

ココ：
日本のホッケーについてライターになろうと思ったきっかけは何ですか？

ビー：
私は長年ホッケーの大ファンで、どんな形であれホッケーに関わることを楽しんできました。
日本のホッケー界は小さいですが、とてつもない可能性を秘めています。
グリッツの試合を見た瞬間、このスポーツにはここで計り知れないほどのポテンシャルがあると確信しました。

どんな形であれ、このスポーツをここで広めていきたいと思っています。
多くの人にとって、それはアクセスのしやすさに尽きます。

正直、日本でホッケーのファンになるのは難しいです。
アジアリーグやXHLのチームに関する情報は少なく、あったとしても見つけるのが困難だから。

特に日本語が話せない海外のファンにとってはなおさらです。

できる限り多くの人にこのスポーツを届けたいと思っています。

誰もがホッケーファン。ただ、まだそれに気づいていないだけです。

 

ココ：
日本のホッケーで見過ごされていると思う点はありますか？

ビー：
たくさんあります！
ここにいる外国人選手は声をそろえて主張すると思いますが、他の場所ではあまり語られていません。

彼らは皆、信じられないほど高いスケート技術を持っています。
海外のホッケーでは、体格の大きい選手はスケート技術が下手でも通用する傾向がある中、このリーグでは体格の優位性はありません。

誰もが高い技術を持っていなければならないのです。
平野裕志郎選手のように体格で有利な選手でさえ、驚異的なスケーターですってしまいます。
もう一つ特筆すべきは、ファンの熱狂ぶりでしょうか。日本のファンは別格です。

アメリカやカナダで観戦した試合では、ホームチームが負け始めると、ファンは一気に沈んだ表情になってしまいます。
第3ピリオドで3-0とリードされている状況で、ホームの観客を盛り上げるのは至難の業。

でも日本では、ファンは最後の最後まで全力で応援します。
「ゴー、グリッツ、ゴー！」は、パックがドロップされる前から、選手がリンクを去った後まで、スコアやチームのプレー内容に関係なく、ずっと声援を送り続けます。

こうしたファンの持つ希望と信念は、称賛に値します。

 

ココ：
日本のアイスホッケーの未来に、どのような期待を抱いていますか？

ビー：
もっと多くの選手が海外で成長し、その経験を日本に持ち帰ってほしいです。
子供たちがプレーできるリンクも、もっとあったらいいと思います。
もっと多くの人がアイスホッケーファンになってくれたら、どんなに良いでしょう。
グリッツがプレーオフに進出してほしいです。

 

ココ：
何か付け加えたいことはありますか？

 

ビー：
試合やイベントで私を見かけたら、ぜひ声をかけてください。
日本語も話せるので、皆さんとたくさんお話したいです。

How did you discover the Yokohama Grits?

One day, I was complaining to my friends that I hadn’t seen a live hockey game in at least a year, and that I was going through withdrawals.
My friends responded, “Are you insane? There’s a team in Yokohama. You live there.”
And the rest is history!

Who’s your all-time favorite Yokohama Grits player, and what moment or trait makes them stand out?

As much as I love Rockwell and Rauter, I have to give it to Matsukane.
He plays a physical style that you don’t see all that often in this league, which I really appreciate.
Solid two-way player.

Favorite Grits Game you have seen live?

Definitely when Rocky scored his first goal against the Freeblades.

Favorite Japanese Sports Teams?

I live here in Yokohama, so of course I am a massive BayStars fan.
In Japanese Women’s hockey, I am a Karuizawa Fairies fan.

Favorite NHL Team?

The Anaheim Ducks!
For a little bit, my hair was plum and jade for the playoffs.

Favorite NHL player now?

On my Anaheim Ducks, my favorite player is Lukas Dostal.
He has his ups and downs, but I’ve been a Dostal truther since before we traded Gibson.

 

Favorite NHL player of all time?

I’ve followed Trevor Zegras since he was on the USA Development Team.
I was heartbroken when we traded him to Philly.

Favorite Sports Teams outside of Japan?

HV71 in the SHL, Adler Mannheim in the DEL, Düsseldorfer EG in the DEL2, Maryland Black Bears in the NAHL, San Diego Gulls in the AHL.
Oh, and the Baltimore Orioles.

What’s the most memorable game you’ve ever watched, live or on TV, and why?

I was at the Vegas Golden Knights-Toronto Maple Leafs game where Fleury literally jumped across the crease to make that insane save.
I remember thinking it was going to go in, and starting to turn to my then-boyfriend to mourn, and then seeing the replay on the jumbotron.
What a moment.

If you could attend any historic hockey game from the past, which one would you pick?

Who’s an underrated player on Yokohama Grits you think deserves more attention right now?

Saito.

What made you want to write about Japanese hockey?

I’ve been a big hockey fan for a while, and have always enjoyed being involved in hockey in any way I can be.
Japan’s hockey scene is small, but has insane promise.
I knew, the second I saw a Grits game, that this sport has completely untapped potential here.
I want to grow the game here in any way that I can, and for a lot of people, that comes down to accessibility.
It’s difficult to be a new fan of hockey here; there isn’t much information about the teams in the Asia League and XHL, and the information that there is can be difficult to find.
Doubly so if you are a fan from overseas who doesn’t speak Japanese.
I want to bring this sport to everyone I can.
Everyone is a hockey fan. They just don’t know it yet.

 

Are there any aspects of Japanese hockey that you think are overlooked?

So many!
Import players here will tell you this, but it isn’t often mentioned anywhere else: Every single one of these guys is an incredibly skilled skater.
In overseas hockey, physically larger players typically get away with being bad skaters.
No one has the size advantage in this league.
Everyone has to be skilled.
Even players who do have the size advantage, like Yushiroh Hirano, are still insane skaters.
Another thing is the dedication of the fans.
These fans are next level.
At any game I’ve been to in the US or Canada, once a home team starts losing, their fans get solemn.
It’s a lot more difficult to make a home crowd cheer when you’re down 3-0 in the third.
In Japan, though, these fans go hard until the last second.
It’s “Go Grits Go” from before puck drop to after the players leave the ice, regardless of what the score is or how the team played.
There is a level of hope and belief in these fans that deserves recognition.

What are your hopes for the future of Japanese hockey?

I hope more of these guys go overseas and develop and bring that development back.
I hope we get more rinks so kids can play.
I hope more people find out that they’re hockey fans.
I hope the Grits make the playoffs.
