コタローは一人暮らしは容赦なく心臓をえぐってくる

TikTokで見つけた1本の動画が、すべての始まりでした。

最初は「またどこかのアニメの切り抜きだろう」と思って、親指はすでに上スワイプの準備をしていました。
でもなぜか、気づいたら最後まで見ていたのです。

その動画の内容はこう。
無料の風船をもらおうとする小さな子供が主役。
風船は1人1個というルールがあるのに、その子は帽子をかぶり、服を着替え、果てはアントニオ猪木のコスプレまでして、何度も何度もいろんな色の風船をもらいに来るのでした（個人的にこの猪木コスが最高すぎて、見るのをやめられなくなっちゃいました）。

ここまでは、子供目線の微笑ましくて無邪気なアニメでしょう。
でもこの動画には、続きがあるのです。

風船配りを終えた男性が家路につく途中、さっきの子供が一人で遊んでいる公園を見かけます。
その子のベルトには、もらったばかりの風船がいくつも結びつけられていました。

よく見ると、風船ひとつひとつに顔が描かれていて、裏には「お父さん」「お母さん」「お兄ちゃん」「お姉ちゃん」という文字が。

コメント欄を見てみると、「闇すぎる」「泣いた」という声が溢れていました。

そしてこのアニメが持つ暗い展開をもっと見たいと思って調べてみると、ネットフリックスのシリーズ「コタローは1人暮らし」だとわかったのです。

 

「コタローは1人暮らし」とは？

2022年3月にNetflixで配信開始した、心温まる日本のアニメシリーズ。
主人公は4歳の男の子、サトウコタロー。
礼儀正しくて驚くほど自立した彼が、ひとりでボロアパートに引っ越してくるところから物語が始まります。

短いオムニバス形式のエピソードを通じて、個性豊かな隣人たち——特に隣に住む売れない漫画家カガヤ・シンとの心あたたまる交流が描かれます。
可愛らしくほのぼのした見た目の裏に、孤独・疑似家族・成長の痛みをテーマにした深く感動的な物語が隠されている、知る人ぞ知る名作。
現時点では全10話、
吹き替え・字幕両方で視聴可能です。
アニメーション制作はライデンフィルム。

風船のシーンは、まだ序章に過ぎなかった

順番に見ていくと、あの風船のシーンは序の口だったとすぐにわかりました。
見れば見るほど、コタローの悲しい過去と背景が少しずつ明かされ、視聴者を容赦なく追い詰めていきます。

「次のエピソードはきっと明るいはず」「コタローは救われるはず」と淡い期待を持ちながら見ていると、それは見事に裏切られ、気づけば泣いていたという人がいても不思議ではないくらいです。

物語が進むにつれて、胸を締め付けるような展開が次々と待ち受けており、何気なく見始めるとどうにもならない無力感に苛まれることになります。
主人公コタローを取り巻く世界の理不尽さと、彼の過去が少しずつ明かされるたびに、「なぜ彼はこんな生き方をしているのか」という問いが頭から離れなくなるからかもしれません。

ストレス発散や気軽な暇つぶしに見たいなら、絶対にやめておいた方がいい。

でも私のように「型破りな視点」や「社会問題のリアルな描写」に惹かれるタイプには、見逃せない一作です。

思いっきり泣きたい夜や、社会があえて目を背けている闇の中に浸りたい時に「コタローは1人暮らし」を試してみることを強くおすすめします！

Kotaro Lives Alone went viral, watched it, now I feel awful

It all started when I saw a short video that was going viral on TikTok.

Initially thinking it was just another scene from a random Japanese anime, my thumb was ready for an upward swipe, but for some reason, I ended up watching the entire video.

 

The video was about a small child who wanted free balloons.

 

There was a rule that each child could only have one, so the kid would come grabbing more, wearing a hat, changing clothing, and at one point even dressed up as Antonio Inoki to get several balloons of different colors (the Inoki costume was a personal highlight that kept me watching the video).

 

Up to this point, it was a heartwarming, innocent animation from a child’s perspective, but this video had more that really spoke to the viewer in a heart breaking way.

 

The man, finishing his balloon-distributing job, was walking home. He came across a park where he spotted the kid from earlier; the one that collected many balloons.

 

The child was playing alone in the park, but he had the balloons he received attached to his belt with him.

 

When the man looked closely, he noticed that each balloon had a face drawn on it, and the words “Dad,” “Mom,” “Big Brother,” and “Big Sister” were written on the back.

 

Comments like “It’s dark!” and “Wow, this is sad!” flooded for that video.
Realizing I was craving more of the dark turns this anime had to offer, I discovered it was a Netflix series called “Kotaro Lives Alone” upon simple research.

Kotaro Lives Alone is about …

Kotaro Lives Alone (original title: Kotarō wa Hitori Gurashi) is a heartfelt Japanese anime series that premiered on Netflix in March 2022. It follows four-year-old Kotaro Sato, a remarkably independent and polite little boy who moves into a rundown apartment building all by himself. Through short, slice-of-life episodes, he forms touching friendships with his quirky neighbors — most notably Shin Karino, a struggling manga artist next door. Beneath the cute and wholesome surface lies a deeply emotional story about loneliness, found family, and the quiet pains of growing up, making it a surprisingly moving hidden gem. The 10-episode season is available dubbed and subbed, with beautiful animation by Liden Films.

Review after watching the anime

Watching the series in order, I noticed the balloon scene at the beginning is just the tip of the iceberg for worse heartaches to come.
The more you watch, the more Kotaro’s sad past and background are revealed, mercilessly tormenting every viewer.

 

If you watch it with the half-hearted expectation that “the next episode will surely be brighter,” or “Kotaro will find salvation,” you’ll easily find yourself proven wrong, being left there crying.

 

As the story progresses, heartbreaking developments await, and if you start watching casually, you might end up feeling quite the agony of helplessness.
The absurdities of the world surrounding the protagonist Kotaro and his past are revealed little by little, leaving viewers constantly speculating about what motivates him to live the way he does.

 

If you’re looking to relieve stress or just want something interesting, this is definitely an anime you should avoid.

 

However, for someone like me, who is interested in its unconventional nature and realistic portrayal of societal problems, it became an unmissable encounter.

 

If you want to have a good cry, or if you want to immerse yourself in the darkness that society deliberately avoids to address, I highly recommend “Kotaro Lives Alone.”
