タイラー・ロックウェル、香港でMVP獲得！シーズン中もオフも最高すぎる

我らがグリッツ、タイラー・ロックウェル選手に独占インタビューしてみました！

シーズン中もGOAT（史上最高：Greatest Of All Timeの略）なら、オフシーズンもGOAT。
今回、香港メガアイスホッケーファイブズ大会でMVPを獲得したタイラー・ロックウェル選手に、貴重なお話を聞かせてもらう機会をいただきました。

ビー：
オフシーズン中にもかかわらず、インタビューに応じていただきありがとうございます。

ロックウェル選手：
全然問題ないですよ。

 

 

ビー：
今回が香港メガアイスホッケーファイブズ初参加とのこと。
この大会をどうやって知ったんですか？

ロックウェル選手：
アレックス・ラウター選手が以前香港に行っていたのを見て、「めちゃくちゃ楽しそうだな」と思ったんです。
今年、あるチームがアレックスに声をかけた時、彼が「ロイと俺も行きたがってるよ」と伝えてくれて。
実質エージェントみたいなことをしてくれたんですが、その1週間後に彼が怪我をしてしまって（アレックス・ラウターはアジアリーグ後半戦を下半身の怪我で欠場）。
でもロイと僕は「それでも行きたい」ということになって、イーストスターズというチームに招待してもらいました。

 

 

ビー：
香港でプレーするのは初めてでしたか？

ロックウェル選手：
はい、香港自体が人生初でした。

 

ビー：
どんな期待を持って行きましたか？
到着した時の印象は？

ロックウェル選手：
正直、何も想像できていなかったですね。
レット・ウィルソン（イーストスターズの別選手）がわざわざ空港まで迎えに来てくれて、香港での生活に必要なことを全部サポートしてくれたんです。
彼とホイットニー・オルセン、ベン・マカスキルには本当に感謝しています。
おかげで余計なことを考えずに、ホッケーに集中して、香港を楽しむことができました。

香港のリンクはすべてショッピングモールの中にあって、今回のリンクは高層ビルの10階にあったんです。
ランドマークプラザみたいな感じで、リンクの片側にロッカールーム、もう片側には試合を観ながら食事できるフードコートがあって、ビアガーデンまであった。
プレーしたイーストスターズはホッケー用品も扱うスポーツ・フィットネスの会社で、同じモール内にホッケー用品店、ジム、シューティングエリアまで完備していました。もう、すごいの一言でしたね。

 

 

ビー：
それはすごい！
大会のレベルはどうでしたか？

ロックウェル選手：
ホッケーのレベルには本当に驚きました。
今まで経験した中で、最も楽しいホッケーのひとつでしたね。
正直、どんな大会かわからなかったんです。
こういうトーナメントってカジュアルなものもあれば、ガチなものもあるじゃないですか。
でも今回は完全に本物のホッケーでした。
特にうちのチームは全員レベルが高くて、みんながポジションを完璧にこなしていた。
パックを持って仕掛けようとすると、みんな絶妙なところにいるんですよ。
サマーリーグってメンタル的に100%じゃない選手や、体のキレが落ちている選手もいたりするんですが、このチームの選手たちはそんなこと一切なくて。
シュートもキレてるし、フィジカルもしっかりある。

 

ビー：
最高のホッケーが見られたんですね。
ところで、YouTubeのライブ配信でコメンテーターがあなたのプレースタイルを「冷静」と表現していましたが、ご自分ではどう思いますか？

ロックウェル選手：
そう思いますね。
自分の性格とプレースタイルが合わさってる気がします。
選手には「感情型」と「論理型」の2タイプがいると思っていて、自分は氷上ではあまり感情を出さないんです。
得点した時や勝った時は別ですけど、それ以外は感情をなるべく抑えて、冷静に考えられるようにしています。
コメンテーターにそう言ってもらえるのは嬉しいですね。
さっきも言ったように、チームみんなのレベルが高くてポジショニングも完璧だったから、自分もそういうプレーができたんだと思います。

 

ビー：
インターナショナルAのMVPにも選ばれましたね、おめでとうございます！
選考はどのように行われたんですか？

ロックウェル選手：
ありがとうございます。
正直、よくわからないんですよ（笑）。
決勝では2ゴール2アシストを記録して、そのアシストのひとつがロイへのティップインにつながったのは最高でしたね。

 

ビー：
この大会で得たものを、来シーズンにどう活かしますか？

ロックウェル選手：
新しいメンバーと素早くフィットする力が身についたと思うので、それは絶対に来シーズンに活きてくると思います。
それと、どんなレベルの試合でも、勝つって最高の気持ちなんですよね。
あの感覚を来シーズンのチームに持ち込みたい。
「勝つことの気持ちよさ、俺は覚えてるぞ！今度はお前たちと一緒に勝ちたい」って、そういう気持ちです。

 

ビー：
インターナショナルA優勝とMVP獲得、改めておめでとうございます！
最後に何かひと言。

ロックウェル選手：
ありがとうございます。
ホイットニー・オルセン、ベン・マカスキル、レット・ウィルソンの3人には本当に感謝してもしきれないです。
僕とロイが最高の経験を積めたのは、間違いなく彼らのおかげです。

 

 

ビー：

Tyler Rockwell exclusive interview about Championship in Hong Kong

Tyler Rockwell is the GOAT during the season, and it turns out he’s the GOAT in the offseason, too.
I got the immense privilege to speak with him about his MVP performance in this year’s Hong Kong Mega Ice Hockey Five’s tournament.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Bee : 
Thanks for agreeing to an interview while you’re in the offseason.

Rockwell :
Not at all, not a problem.

Bee : 
So, this was your first time participating in the Hong Kong Mega Ice Hockey Fives.
How did you find out about it?

Rockwell :
I saw that Alex Rauter had gone to Hong Kong before, and I thought, “that looks so fun.”
This year, when one of the teams reached out to Alex to ask him to come back, he told them that Roy and I wanted to come as well.
He actually wound up acting as our agent, since a week later, he got injured [Alex Rauter was out with a lower body injury for the second half of the Asia League season].
Roy and I decided that we still wanted to go, and were invited to play on the East Stars team.

Bee : 
Had you ever played in Hong Kong before?

Rockwell :
No.
It was actually my first time ever in Hong Kong.

 

Bee : 
Wow! Did you have any expectations going in? What was the arrival experience like?

Rockwell :
I didn’t really know what to expect.
Rhett Wilson [another player on East Stars] was incredibly kind in picking us up at the airport and making sure we had all of the things we needed to navigate Hong Kong easily.
I’m incredibly grateful to him, Whitney Olsen, and Ben MacAskill for all of their help getting us where we needed to be and making sure we could focus, play our game, and enjoy our time.
In Hong Kong, all of the rinks are in malls, so this rink was on the 10th floor of a skyscraper.
If you’ve ever been to Landmark Plaza, it’s sort of the same thing.
On one side of the rink is the locker rooms, and the other side is a food court where you can actually see the games going on.
There was a biergarten, too.
The team we were playing for, East Stars, is actually a sports and fitness instruction company in Hong Kong, and they had a full store selling hockey and other fitness equipment in the same mall.
They also had a full gym and puck shooting area.
It was really fascinating!

 

 

Bee : 
That is fascinating.
What was the skill level like at the tournament?

Rockwell :
The level of hockey really surprised me.
It was some of the most fun hockey that I’ve ever played.
I wasn’t sure what to expect going in.
Some tournaments like this take it more seriously than others, and I wasn’t sure if it was going to be 3 forwards, 2 defense, and a goalie, or everyone goes out on lines.
This tournament was legit hockey.
Everyone there was at a really high level, on our team especially.
Everyone played their positions perfectly.
I would get the puck and go to make a play, and everyone would be exactly where they needed to be.
With summer leagues like this, sometimes not everyone is there 100% mentally, or they may not physically be in the best shape, but the guys on our team all still have it.
The shot’s always there, they always have the strength.

 

 

Bee : 
Seems like that made for some fantastic hockey.
Speaking of which, the commentators on the YouTube livestream described your playstyle as “calm.”
Do you find yourself being a calm player?

Rockwell :
I would think so, yeah.
It’s a combination of my personality and my play style, I think.
There’s two types of players; emotional, and logical.
I don’t have much emotion on the ice, except for when we score or win.
I otherwise try to keep my level of emotion low, so that I can think clearly.
That’s a great compliment to me from the commentators, though.
Like I said, everyone on this team was highly skilled, and was always in the right position, so that allowed me to play that way.

 

 

Bee : 
You were also named MVP of International A.
Congratulations!
How was that award decided?

Rockwell :
Thank you. I actually have no idea.
I had two goals and two assists in the final game.
One of my assists actually turned into a tip-in from Roy, which was really cool.

 

 

Bee : 
What aspects of this tournament will you take with you to next season?

Rockwell :
I learned to play with new players fairly quickly, which I think will be helpful for next season for sure.
Also, no matter the level, winning is a fantastic feeling.
I want to bring that feeling to my team next season.
You remember how sweet it is.
For next season, I want to say, I remember how good it was to win something, now I want to win something with you.

 

Bee : 
Awesome.
Congratulations again on winning International A and being named MVP.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Rockwell :
Thanks.
Yeah, I just can’t thank Whitney Olsen, Ben MacAskill, and Rhett Wilson enough.
They were instrumental in making sure that mine and Roy’s experiences were positive.
