Today’s game was one of the most exciting games I’ve seen live!
Originally this column was going to be called “one goal to greatness,” because the Yokohama Grits had so many games this year that we lost by one goal.
Including the tournaments, every single loss we had was by one goal.
Today Anyang jumped up top 3-0.
The refs were god awful, but I guess you can’t teach someone that doesn’t want to learn.
But there was a long period of time where no penalties were called. There was a play where there were at least 6 penalties in 10 seconds, but none were called.
So as a team, we realized “hey, there’s no rules in this game. NO RULES.”
Everyone was down, but number 21, Kai Sugimoto scores, and people started going insane. The whole stadium was electric, chanting “we’re gonna win 4-3!”
Rauter scores 2 goals, and I had my hat ready to throw on the ice for his hattrick.
It’s 3-3 and goes into overtime.
The Grits are very good at getting to overtime, but are horrendous when it comes to shootouts, and lose a lot once it goes to overtime.
So we were just praying for a miracle at that point.
And then, Daiki comes out. Number 74, Daiki Miura, the most loved and hated Grit of all time was having a bad game. He got smashed in the corner, he gave up a goal; it was a rough night for him.
But he scores at overtime, delivering a victory to the Grits, and the place just exploded.
People were hugging each other, and going crazy.
Anyang is probably the strongest team in this league, and for us to get this win was absolutely fantastic.
Also, much love to Anyang’s goalie, the word on the street is that this is his last season.
If it’s so, thank you so much for the memories.
Grits, you used to be the laughing stock of the league.
Every year you’ve improved on the ice, and this year we haven’t been blowing out, so if we could be one goal better, it would take us farther.
Looking forward to today’s game! Go Grits!
