Yuji Iwamoto Head Coach Interview

Q : In the first half of the season, our matches against the Stars Kobe were a close one, with one win and one loss. How do you analyze the factors where we as a team fell just short?

Iwamoto HC :
Reflecting on our mistakes from the first half, we faced the Stars Kobe in consecutive games, a team we absolutely could not afford to lose, as we were determined to advance to the playoffs.
However in the first game, our desire to win got the better of us and we were unable to utilize our strengths of “good defense followed by good offense,” conceding goals from turnovers and resulting in a loss.
In the second game, we focused on defense, shutting down the opponent’s attempts and winning, conceding only one goal.
I believe our eight goals were the result of everyone remaining focused on defense until the end.

Q : We have eight home games remaining. How do you want these games to be in terms of team building?

Iwamoto HC :
To secure a playoff spot, we will maximize our home advantage in our remaining home games and aim for wins.
While our players’ level and scoring ability have improved, conceding goals due to an overemphasis on offense is also an issue.
We want to hone our original style of stealing the puck from good defense and connecting it to offense, and establish a team that can win in the playoffs.
To that end, please cheer on for the team and get Shin-Yokohama fired up.

Daiki Iwamura DF

Q : Have you noticed any changes in your play as a defender?

Miura DF :
This season, I’m particularly conscious of intense battles in front of the goal and in the corners.
This has been something the team has been looking for since Coach Iwamoto took over, and this year, as the leader of the team, I’m very conscious of embodying it myself.
I also want to be proactive in cheering and encouraging not only during the game but also on the bench, playing a role in inspiring the team both on and off the rink.

Q : With eight home games remaining, what theme do you particularly want to focus on as a defender?

Miura DF :
What I value most above all is “being determined to win.”
If we’re aiming to advance to the playoffs, we must remain laser focused to win, no matter the situation.
I believe that winning games is the most important factor in making fans feel that they were glad they came to watch.
I take that thought to the rink every game in mind.

Kai Sugimoto

Q : So far this season, have there been any plays or scenes that have given you a sense of accomplishment as a forward?

Sugimoto FW :
Since the start of the season, I’ve been working hard to master various skating and shooting variations.
These efforts have paid off, and I feel like I’m increasingly able to score and create chances, regardless of the opponent.
I’ve also been feeling more and more satisfied with my performance during games, and I feel like my range of play is definitely expanding.

Q : As the season draws to a close, what do you feel is expected from yourself to contribute to the team?

Sugimoto FW :
On the offensive side, I’m focused on scoring goals, and on defense, I value putting my body on the line until the end to prevent goals.
With our clear goal of advancing to the playoffs, I’m strongly aware of my responsibility to lead the team to victory, while at the same time, never forgetting to maintain a challenging attitude as I continue to take to the ice.
I intend to be prepared for each and every play and take actions that will lead to victory.

Yuto Gondaira

Q : Is there anything you’ve been consciously working on in your own play this season?

Gondaira FW :
As a center, I believe it’s important to contribute to the team on both offense and defense.
In daily practice, I always keep being extra aware to my surroundings and increase my play options.
Also, since I’m not blessed with a large physique, I’m focusing particularly on honing my sharp movements so that I can use my quick starts and speed as my strengths.

Q : What aspects of my play would you like fans to pay attention to on the rink?

Gondaira FW :
I want fans to pay attention to how I move aggressively, while also keeping a close eye on my surroundings and making the most of my teammates.
I’m conscious of being the starting point for moving the puck and setting the tone for the entire team.
I also believe that faceoffs, which can determine the flow of the game, are an important role, so I hope you’ll keep an eye on my tactics and split-second reactions at crucial moments.
