Summer Ghost Anime Review: A Beautiful 45-Minute Gem You Shouldn’t Miss
I recently watched Summer Ghost (サマーゴースト, Samā Gōsuto), a 2021 Japanese animated fantasy drama short film directed by loundraw and produced by Flat Studio.
At just 40 minutes long, it packs more emotional weight than many full-length series.
In an era where most anime feel like they’re constantly trying to one-up each other with bigger stakes, crazier powers, and endless seasons, Summer Ghost stands out by keeping things simple, intimate, and deeply human.
There’s only one central mystery, but it feels meaningful — and more importantly, you genuinely care about every character.
Summer Ghost Anime : The Story
Three high school students — Tomoya Sugisaki, Aoi Harukawa, and Ryō Kobayashi — who met online, gather at an abandoned airfield one summer night.
They’re there to test a local urban legend: if you light fireworks at this spot, the “Summer Ghost” will appear and answer any question you have.
When they light their sparklers, a mysterious young woman named Ayane appears before them.
What follows is a gentle yet powerful story about three teens struggling with their own pain:
-
Tomoya, a gifted artist whose controlling mother forces him to abandon his dreams for academics.
-
Aoi, who is severely bullied at school and has reached a dark, suicidal place.
-
Ryō, who had to give up his passion for basketball due to a terminal illness.
What Makes Summer Ghost Special
The film doesn’t shy away from heavy topics — depression, bullying, suicidal thoughts, grief, and the fear of death — but it never feels exploitative.
Instead, it balances the darkness with a quiet, hopeful tone that leaves you feeling moved rather than crushed.
The characters feel real and layered.
You don’t just sympathize with them — you feel their struggles.
The animation is soft, dreamy, and incredibly beautiful, perfectly matching the melancholic summer atmosphere.
The music and voice acting also elevate the emotional moments without ever feeling over-the-top.
There are a few twists (some predictable, some genuinely surprising), but they all feel earned. By the end, the film leaves you reflecting on your own life: Are you chasing what truly matters? Are you valuing the time you have?
Final Verdict
Summer Ghost is a short, standalone film that delivers way more impact than its runtime suggests.
It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after the credits roll.
