自己紹介
Koco：
まず、自己紹介をお願いします。日本へはどういったきっかけで？
ブライアン： 初めて日本に来たのは1997年のことです。
最初は沖縄に約3年半住んで、その後カリフォルニアに戻りました。
今回が4度目の日本生活で、今はもう離れなくて済む仕事に就いています。
Koco：
もともと野球ファンだったんですか？
ブライアン：
はい。子供の頃から高校2年生まで野球をやっていました。
フロリダ育ちなので、スプリングキャンプを観に行く機会もありましたね。
小さい頃はエクスポズを観に行って、中学に上がってからは引っ越してニューヨーク・メッツのスプリングキャンプ施設の近くに住むようになりました。
子供の頃のフロリダにはまだMLBのチームがなかったので、メッツとブレーブスを応援していました。
地元にはメッツのゲイリー・カーターという選手が住んでいたんですよ。
Koco：
横浜DeNAベイスターズのファンになったのはいつ、どんなきっかけでしたか？
ブライアン：
本格的にファンになったのは2012年頃です。
職場の同僚たちが横浜スタジアムに試合を観に行くことになって、正直あまり乗り気じゃなかったんですが、半ば強引に連れていかれたんです。
ところがその夜の試合がもう最高で、翌日もすぐに足を運んでしまいました。
それ以来、筋金入りのベイスターズファンです。
Koco：
ベイスターズのファンであることは、あなた個人にとってどんな意味を持っているのでしょう？
横浜での生活とはどう結びついていますか？
ブライアン：
ベイスターズのファンであることは、もう生き方の一部になっています。
地域とのつながりが生まれて、新しい人と出会い、友達ができる。
試合観戦は、休日の大きな柱です。
毎年2月の宜野湾でのスプリングキャンプから始まり、夏の間は日本各地を転戦して試合を追いかける。
シーズン中は80〜100試合は観ますね。
Koco：
なぜベイスターズだったんですか？
巨人やタイガースなど他のNPBチームと比べて、どこが違うと感じますか？
ブライアン：
海老名に住んでいるので、ベイスターズが地元のチームというのが一番の理由です。
それに、ベイスターズの試合に来るファンが好きなんですよ。
観に来る人みんなにフレンドリーで、温かく迎えてくれる。
チームも、ファンも、応援団も——全部が合わさって、ベイスターズは特別なチームだと思います。
ジャイアンツファンの方には申し訳ないですが、私にはちょっと……ニューヨーク・ヤンキースを思い出してしまって（笑）。
チームと横浜とのつながり
Koco：
ベイスターズへの愛着が、横浜という街の楽しみ方を変えたことはありますか？
ブライアン：
おかげで横浜がさらに好きになりました。
本当に美しい街なんですが、横浜スタジアムに通うようになって、周辺をぶらつくようになってから、その魅力をちゃんと実感できるようになったと思います。
日本への愛着も深まりましたね。
知人はみんな知っていますが、私はここでの生活が本当に好きで、もう25年近く住んでいます。
アウェー観戦で日本各地を回るようになって、これまで行けなかった場所にもたくさん行けるようになりました。
Koco：
歴代のベイスターズの選手で一番好きな選手は？
また今注目している選手はいますか？
ブライアン：
正直、特定の「一番」は決めていないんです。チーム全員を応援したいので。
好きな選手がチームを離れてしまった時に、周りのファンが落ち込んでいるのを見るのがつらくて……。
ただ、ユニフォームのコレクションを見れば少しバレますが（笑）、特に思い入れが強いのは、新浜、ローズ、牧、友哉、そしてヤスアキですね。
Koco：
試合当日の過ごし方を教えてください。
ブライアン：
OCD気味なので、ルーティンが決まっています（笑）。
海老名から横浜を経由して関内へ。試合開始の1時間半前には到着するようにしています。
まずどこかで昼食か夕食を済ませて、それからスタジアムへと足を運びます。
横浜スタジアムのドリームゲート前の壁のところで、試合1時間前に友人グループと合流するのが決まりです。
野球の話で盛り上がってから中に入って、スタメン発表の時には席についているようにしています。
発表後にスタンドを回って知り合いに挨拶して、それから一塁打まで自分の席に戻ります。
試合後は、翌日仕事があるかどうかによりますね。
余裕があれば右側のスタンドで勝利を祝って、その後はスタジアム周辺でゆっくりするか、そのまま帰るかです。
試合当日とファン文化について
Koco：
応援団のどんなところが好きですか？
よくやるチャントやルーティンはありますか？
またアウェー観戦はどれくらい行きますか？
ブライアン：
応援団があるから試合に行くと言っても過言じゃないです。
ベイスターズの応援席以外には座りません。
一番好きなのは「チャンステーマ0」ですね。
アウェーにもよく行きます。
特に6月、7月、8月の頭は多いです。
全球場制覇していますが、どこかひとつを選ぶのは難しいな……。
エスコンは本当に素晴らしいスタジアムですが、駅から遠いのが難点。
仙台の楽天モバイルパーク宮城も好きです。
Koco：
横浜スタジアムで経験した中で、最高の雰囲気はいつでしたか？
ブライアン：
間違いなく、2024年の日本シリーズ優勝が決まった瞬間です。
スタジアムが完全に狂っていた（笑）。
あの空気は忘れられません。
Koco：
ベイスターズ観戦で一番の思い出は？
ブライアン：
やっぱり2024年の日本シリーズ制覇です。
3位から勝ち上がったあのチームの優勝は、本当に特別でした。
甲子園と東京ドームに乗り込んで勝ち切って、最後はホークスに最初の2試合を落としてから4連勝。
もう信じられなかったですね。
忘れられない思い出
Koco：
2024年の日本シリーズを通じて、どんな気持ちでしたか？
ブライアン：
とにかく最高でした。
甲子園、東京ドーム、そして横浜スタジアムでの3試合と、直接観られたのが本当によかった。
Koco：
スタンドで経験した面白いエピソードや、忘れられない出来事はありますか？
ブライアン：
ひとつあります（笑）。恥ずかしいやつですが。
2022年に千葉で試合を観ていた時のことです。
ZOZOマリンスタジアムのレフトスタンド、あそこの段差が少し変わった形をしていて。
試合でベイスターズが守備に就くタイミングで席に戻ろうとしたら、階段で派手に転んでしまったんです。
その時カメラが一塁側ダグアウト付近から内野の左側を映していて、レフトスタンドが背景に入るアングルだったんですが、ちょうどライブ中継にその映像が流れていて、転んでいる私がバッチリ映っていたらしいんです。
テレビで観ていた友達から「映ってたよ」とメッセージが来て……。
土曜の試合だったので最悪でした。
足首を捻挫してしまって、ホテルで安静にしていなければならず、翌日の日曜の試合を諦めることになりました。
Koco：
ベイスターズを長年応援してきて、忍耐力や仲間への忠義、コミュニティの大切さについて何か学んだことはありますか？
ブライアン：
長いファン歴の中で、チームの浮き沈みをずっと見てきました。
なるべくポジティブでいて、ネガティブなことに引きずられないようにしてきたつもりです。
もちろん試合の中で納得いかないことがある日もありますが、それでも切り替えて、前向きな部分に目を向けるようにしています。
それと、ファン同士のコミュニティ、特に応援席でのつながりが本当に大切だと感じています。
ベイスターズの試合に行かなければ絶対に出会えなかったような、スタジアムの外でも会う仲の友達ができました。
より深りしていく、個人的な振り返り
Koco：
熱狂的なファンでいながら、仕事や生活とのバランスはどうやって取っていますか？
ブライアン：
そこが一番の課題ですね（笑）。
仕事中は仕事が最優先。全力で取り組まないといけない。
でも仕事を終えたら、即「ゲームオンモード」です。
これだけ試合に行くと、他のことに使える時間はほとんどなくなります。
毎シーズン「今年は少し減らそう」と思うんですが、夏のメインの趣味が試合観戦なので、結局減らせないんですよね。
Koco：
過去・現在を問わず、ベイスターズの選手誰かとじっくり話せるとしたら、誰に何を聞きますか？
ブライアン：
ありがたいことに、これまでいくつかの機会に選手や監督と話させてもらえたことがあります。
外国人選手に聞くのが好きな質問があって——初めて打席に立った時、打席に入った瞬間から打ち終わるまでずっと観客が自分の名前を叫んでいる、あの経験はどんな感じなのか、ということです。
あの歓声の中で、どうやって集中力を保って打ちに行けるのか、聞いてみたいですね。
Koco：
ベイスターズファンになろうか考えている人に、一言メッセージをお願いします。
ブライアン：
これは特に、ベイスターズを応援しようか迷っている外国人の方へ向けてです。
ぜひやってみてください。
チームを応援して、楽しんで、他のファンと話して。
ただ、日本の野球観戦の作法やマナーは大切に守ってください。
Koco：
今後のチームへの期待を聞かせてください。
ブライアン：
もちろんまた優勝してほしい！
でもそれ以上に、全員が怪我なくシーズンを終えられる、楽しいシーズンになることを願っています。

Tell us a bit about yourself —
Koco :
What brought you to Japan?
Brian :
I first came to Japan in 1997.
I first lived in Okinawa for about three and a half years, then I moved back to California.
This is my fourth time living in Japan, and now I have a job where I won’t need to leave again.
Koco :
Did you grow up a baseball fan?
Brian :
Yes. I played baseball as a kid and through my sophomore year of high school. I grew up in Florida. I used to get to go watch spring camps. When I was younger, I would go watch the Expos. Then in middle school, we moved and were close to the New York Mets spring camp facility.
Koco :
Who is/was your MLB Team growing up?
Brian :
Most of my childhood, Florida didn’t have a team. So, I cheered for the Mets and Braves. There was a Mets player, Gary Carter, who lived in the area where I grew up.
Koco :
When and how did you become a Yokohama BayStars fan?
Brian :
I really became a fan in about 2012.
There was a group of coworkers who were going to a game at Yokohama Stadium.
I really wasn’t interested in going, but they basically forced me to go.
I enjoyed the game so much that night, I went back again the next night.
Ever since then, I have been a die-hard Baystars fan.
Koco :
What does being a BayStars fan mean to you personally?
How does it fit into your life in Yokohama (or Japan)?
Brian :
Being a Baystars fan has become a way of life for me.
It gives me a connection to the community, and it is a great way to meet new people and make friends.
Going to games is a big part of what I do in my downtime.
From going to spring camp in Ginowan each February, to travelling around Japan all summer to watch the team play, it keeps me busy.
I average between 80 and 100 games a season.
Connection to the Team & Yokohama
Koco :
Why the BayStars specifically? What makes them different from other NPB teams (Giants, Tigers, etc.) in your eyes?
Brian :
The Baystars were the logical choice because I live in Ebina.
This is the local team.
I also enjoy the fans at Baystars games.
They are always very friendly and welcoming to everyone who wants to watch a Baystars game.
I think the team, the fans, and the ōendan (応援団 ) make the Baystars a special team to support.
Sorry, Tokyo Giants fans, but I could never be a Giants fan.
They remind me too much of the New York Yankees.
Koco :
How has your love for the BayStars changed the way you experience Yokohama as a city?
Brian :
Being a Baystars fan has made me love Yokohama even more.
Yokohama is such a beautiful city.
I don’t think I appreciated it enough until I started going to games at Yokohama Stadium and spending time in the surrounding areas.
It has also increased my appreciation for Japan.
Anyone who knows me knows I love living here.
I have lived here for close to 25 years.
Following the team around Japan for visitor games has also allowed me to see so much more of Japan.
Koco :
Favorite BayStars player of all time (past or present) and why?
Any current player you’re especially excited about?
Brian :
Honestly, I don’t think I have a favorite.
I try to support every player on the team.
I think it is sad to watch friends heartbroken when their player moves on from the team.
That being said, I can name a few that maybe I have supported a little more (as evidenced by my uniform collection). Aranami, Rose, Maki, Yuudai, and Yasuaki.
Yokohama Baystars Game Day & Fan Culture
Koco :
Walk us through a typical BayStars game day for you.
Brian :
I have OCD and like to have routines, so my game day is pretty predictable.
I head to Kannai via Yokohama from Ebina.
I usually arrive at Kannai about an hour and a half before the game starts.
I find something for lunch/dinner.
Then I head to the stadium.
I always meet with a group of friends on the wall across from the Dream Gate at Yokohama Stadium.
We meet about one hour before game time.
We catch up on the baseball happenings, and then I head inside to get ready.
I like to be at my seat when the starting lineups are announced.
After starting lineups are announced, I will make my rounds and say hi to some friends in the stands.
Then back to my seat for the first pitch.
After the game, it depends on whether I need to work the next day.
I usually stay and celebrate the win in the right stand, unless I need to work early the next day.
After that, it is either hang out near the stadium or head home for the night.
Koco :
What’s your favorite part of the BayStars cheering/ōendan culture?
Do you have a go-to chant or ritual?
How often do you go to away games?
Favorite stadium to visit outside of Yokohama?
Brian :
The ōendan is what brings me to the games. I only sit in the Baystars cheering section.
I would say my go-to chant is Chance Theme 0 (チャンステーマ0).
I will go to a lot of away games.
Especially in June, July, and the beginning of August.
Picking a favorite away stadium is hard.
I’ve been to them all. Es COn is a beautiful stadium, but so far from the station.
Maybe Rakuten in Sendai is nice also.
Koco :
What’s the best atmosphere you’ve ever experienced at Yokohama Stadium?
Brian :
Without a doubt, it would have to be when we clinched the Japan Series in 2024.
The stadium was crazy!
Memorable Moments
Koco :
What’s your all-time favorite BayStars memory (a big win, comeback, player moment, etc.)?
Brian :
Has to be winning the Japan series in 2024.
That was a special team to win it after finishing third place.
Going to Koshein and Tokyo Dome and being able to win in those stadiums against those teams.
Then winning four in a row against the Hawks after dropping the first two games.
It was amazing.
Koco :
How did you feel during the 2024 Japan Series run?
Brian :
Like I said above, it was amazing.
Glad I was able to attend games at Koshien, the Tokyo Dome, and of course the three games at Yokohama Stadium.
Koco :
Any funny, emotional, or unforgettable stories from the stands involving other fans?
Brian :
Ha ha.
Well, actually there was a funny, more embarrassing moment when I was watching a game in Chiba in 2022.
The steps are a little weird in the left stands at Zo Zo Marine.
I was coming back to my seat as the Baystars were taking the field.
The camera was maybe near the first base dugout and looking towards the left side of the infield.
On my way back to my seat, I tripped and fell down the stairs.
Because of the angle of the camera, the left outfield seats were in the background of the live feed on TV.
You can see me falling in the background.
Even one of my friends watching on TV say it and messaged me.
Pretty embarrassing.
The worst part was it was a Saturday game.
I rolled my ankle and had to stay at the hotel and miss the Sunday game that series.
Deeper / Personal Reflections
Koco :
Has supporting the BayStars taught you anything about perseverance, loyalty, or community?
Brian :
Having been a fan for a long time, I have seen the ups and downs of the team over the years.
I have always tried to keep a positive outlook and not dwell on the negatives.
Of course there are days where I don’t agree with something that might happen in the game, but I still try to move on and stay focused on the positives.
I also enjoy the community that is built with the fans, especially in the Baystars cheering section.
I’ve made close friends that I see outside of the stadium that would have never met had it not been for going to the Baystars games.
Koco :
How do you balance being a huge fan with the rest of your life (work, family, other hobbies)?
Brian :
Yes. This is the challenge.
When I work, work has to be number one.
I need to focus on doing my job to the best of my ability.
But, once I leave work, it is game on mode.
Going to so many games takes a lot of time and doesn’t leave a lot of time for other things.
Every season I say I am going to cut back and not go to as many games, but the games are my main hobby in the summer, so I never cut back the number of games.
Koco :
If you could sit down with any BayStars player (past or present) for a conversation, who would it be and what would you ask?
Brian :
I am kind of lucky.
I have had the opportunity to meet with quite a few players and managers and have conversations.
I think the question I like to ask the foreign players when I meet them is what it is like the first time they step in the box to hit and they hear the crowd chanting their entire at bat.
How hard is it to zone the crowd out and focus on hitting.
Koco :
What message would you give to someone who’s thinking about becoming a BayStars fan?
Brian :
This is mainly targeted at foreigners thinking about supporting the Baystars.
Do it. Support the team.
Go, have fun, talk with other fans, but be respectful of the customs and courtesies of the Japanese baseball experience.
Koco :
Looking ahead — what are your hopes for the team in the next few seasons?
Brian :
Of course I hope they can win the championship again soon.
More than that, I hope for a fun season where everyone finishes the season healthy.
