横浜グリッツに今シーズンから加入したタイラー・ロックウェル選手にインタビューしてみました！
今後活躍を見せてくれるであろう彼の経歴や日本についての思いをご紹介していきます。
彼の意外な一面や共感できる部分が見えてくるかも？
ココ：
横浜GRITSとの契約に至るまでの経緯は？
タイラー：
12歳の頃から日本でホッケーをしたいと思い続けており、大学卒業後、プロとしてプレーできると気づきました。
ホッケーを通して北米やヨーロッパなど世界を見てみたいといつも思っていた中、日本に来ることは常に目標であり、実際に来られたことは私にとって夢が実現した瞬間でした。
様々な人々のおかげで、2024年の夏にチームのオーナーの一人と連絡を取ることができ、ジェネラルマネージャーの御子柴崇さんを知ることができました。
数ヶ月間にわたってメールやZoomミーティングで、今後の展望やダブルキャリアなどについて話し合った結果、横浜GRITSとの契約をオファーされたので、すぐにサインしました。
ココ：
初戦でゴールを決めましたが、どんな気持ちでしたか？
重荷が軽くなったような安堵だったのか、それともいつも通りのことでしたか？
タイラー：
新しいチームでの初戦でゴールを決められたことは、間違いなく大きなプラスになりますね。
夏の間、ハードなトレーニングを積んできた甲斐あって、決勝ゴールを決めることができて本当に嬉しいです。
GRITSがシーズン初戦で勝利を収めたことで、チームの全員を誇りに思います。
ココ：
PK戦の決勝ゴールは、今年一番のファインプレーの一つでした。
点を取った瞬間はどんな気持ちでしたか？
タイラー：
ユウジさんがディフェンスマンである私を信頼してくれ、PK戦に出場させてくれたことは本当に嬉しいです。
PKの決め手となる動きは比較的自信があるのですが、審判が笛を吹くのを待っている間、胸が締め付けられる思いでした。
ゴールを決めた時は、週末に勝ち点6のうち5を獲得できたことにとても興奮しました。
ただ最後の2分で2失点してしまい、ああいう状況になってしまったので、ほろ苦い気持ちもありました。
ココ：
ディフェンスマンとして、既に4試合で3ゴールを挙げていますが、自分を攻撃的なディフェンスマンだと考えていますか？
タイラー：
私は今でも双方向のディフェンスマンだと思っています。
まずはディフェンスのプレーをしっかり行うことを心がけています。
私の得意分野は、パックをディフェンスからオフェンスへとスムーズに移行させることで、オフェンスゾーンでの時間を増やすことです。
ココ：
シーズンを通してゴール前で攻める予定ですか？
タイラー：
もちろん！
グリッツでは、「まずシュート」という精神をもっと強く持つ必要があります。
目的を持ってネットを攻めることで、プレーメイクのチャンスが生まれます。
ココ：
チームもあなたも素晴らしいスタートを切っていますが、まだトップチームとの試合が残っています。
アイスバックス、レッドイーグルス、アニャンとの試合に臨むにあたり、あなたとチームの自信はどのくらいありますか？
タイラー：
アイスバックス、レッドイーグルス、アニャンとの試合には、いつでも勝てるという自信を持って臨んでいます。
これらのチームは現在までに非常に優れた成績を収めていますが、彼らにも勝ってプレーオフ出場権を獲得できると信じています。
ココ：
ミシガン工科大学ハスキーズでの大学生活の中、最も誇りに思った瞬間は？
タイラー：
1年生の頃は、出場機会を得るのがいつも大変でした。
1年目はあまり出場しませんでしたが、年間、そして夏休みを通して、本当に多くの努力をしました。
氷上やジムで、数え切れないほどの練習時間を過ごしました。
2年生の初めから4年生まで、一度も試合を欠席することなく、毎年役割が大きくなっていきました。
この経験を通して、プロセスに集中し、目標を見失わないことの大切さを身をもって学びました。
ココ：
ECHL（米イーストコースト・ホッケーリーグ）でプレーする機会に恵まれましたが、カラマズー・ウィングスでの時間はどんな経験をしましたか？
タイラー：
カラマズーでは、毎晩「全力を出す」方法を教わりました。
このリーグでは、5日間のうち4日間、4つの異なる都市で試合がありました。
バスでの移動は深夜に長時間に及び、次の日の試合に備えて少しでも休息を取ろうとしていました。
精神的にも肉体的にも25%しか力が出ない時でも、100%の力を発揮する方法を学べたことに感謝しています。
リーグ自体が非常にフィジカルが強く、誰もが次のレベルを目指して競争が激しかったです。
ココ：
リーグ・マグヌスで、所属チームであるマルセイユ（余談：素晴らしいロゴとユニフォームですよね）はプロとして初めてプレーオフに進出しました。
当時の雰囲気はどのようなものでしたか？また、そこでの所属経験から何を学びましたか？
タイラー：
マルセイユの応援と雰囲気は、今もそうですが最高でした。
フランスで素晴らしい経験をすることができ、その国とチームの素晴らしさは言葉では言い尽くせないくらいです。
マルセイユはフランスのトップリーグに昇格した最初の年だったので、シーズン開幕前のチームへの期待は非常に低かったです。
しかし素晴らしいシーズンを過ごし、12チーム中5位という好成績を収めました。
決勝に進出したボルドーとは、第7戦で延長戦にまで持ち込むことができました。
横浜グリッツは設立からまだ数年しか経っておらず、3位以上になったことはありませんが、チームは今、かつてないほど良い状態です。
ココ：
プレーオフでの経験は、チームに何か貢献できると思いますか？
タイラー：
はい、ヨーロッパと北米で4年間プロとして培ってきた経験は、チームを次のステップへと導く力になるでしょう。それが私が参加した理由の一つでもあります！
グリッツの選手たちと様々な視点や知識を共有することで、ゲームに新たな次元を加えることができるからです。
ココ：
ミシガン工科大学、ECHL、ヨーロッパリーグなどでプレーしてきた経験をお持ちですね。
ほんの数試合しかプレーしていない中、アジアリーグと他のリーグを比較するとどうですか？
タイラー：
アジアリーグには独特のプレースタイルがあります。
ほとんどの選手は北米やヨーロッパの選手と同等のスキルと才能を持っています。
私がこれまでプレーしてきたどのリーグよりも、アジアリーグには優れたスケーターが揃っていると思います。
北米は平均的な体格と強さがはるかに優れています。
故郷では、私はいつも一番小柄な選手でした！
ココ：
日本に来る外国人の多くは、日本での生活について様々な感想を持っています。
あなたにとって日本への移住はいかがでしたか？
タイラー：
日本に来ることが決まってからは、様々な期待を胸にしていました。
そしてすぐに、あらゆる面で私の期待を上回ってくれました！
正直に言って、食べ物、文化、そしてチームが大好きです。
ここでの毎日は私にとって祝福であり、この機会を最大限に活用しようと努力しています。
ココ：
横浜で今のところ一番好きなところはどこですか？
タイラー：
ホッケーや食べ物以外では、初めてベイスターズの試合を観戦したのが本当に嬉しかったです。
最高の雰囲気で、ベイスターズがジャイアンツに逆転勝利しました！
ランドマークタワーの前で、初めて日本のアイドルグループのパフォーマンスも偶然見ました。
観客の熱狂ぶりに、思わず自分も1時間も見入ってしまいました。
ココ：
お気に入りの日本食は？
タイラー：
・好きな寿司：サーモン、マグロ、いなり寿司
・牛カツ
・イーチャン担々麺（チームのスポンサーでもあります）！！
・しゃぶしゃぶ
・焼きサバ
好きな食べ物は山ほどありますが、これらは間違いなく私のお気に入りの一つです。
ココ：
アレックス・ラウター選手以外では、北米やヨーロッパの選手のほとんどは1年かそれ以下しか滞在しません。
彼のように複数シーズン滞在してくれることを願っています。
今後の計画はありますか？それとも、まずは一日ずつ大切に過ごしている段階でしょうか？
タイラー：
今は、一日一日を大切に過ごしています。
ここでの毎日が本当に楽しいからです。
グリッツを日本一のチームにするのが私の目標です！
将来どうなるかは分かりませんが、横浜グリッツでもっと長く過ごせたらと思っています！
ココ：
ここまでプレーしてきた短い期間で、どんなチームメイトと良い関係を築けましたか？
タイラー：
GRITSは本当に素晴らしい団体で、チームの全員が私と親しくなろうと努力してくれました。
例えば、アレックス・ラウター選手は温かく迎えてくれ、案内もしてくれました。
彼もアメリカ人なので、私たちの関係は良好です。
ロイ・スズキ選手も面白くてみんな大好きです。
ゴールキーパーのカイ・トミタ選手も、私がチームに慣れるのに積極的に協力してくれました。
ココ：
ロッカールームでのチームの雰囲気はどんな感じですか？
タイラー：
ロッカールームの雰囲気は素晴らしく、氷上でもそれが表れます！
シーズンを通して成功を収めるには、チームの結束力が不可欠です。
ココ：
アイスリンク以外では、どんな趣味や情熱を持っていますか？
タイラー：
妻のフランキーと散歩に行くのが大好きです。
家では私が料理をし、彼女がパンを焼いてくれるんです。
新しい場所を探検するのも好きで、日本にはたくさんの魅力があります。
ココ：
貴方の名前をグーグルで検索すると、ティーンエイジ・ミュータント・ニンジャ・タートルズのキャラクターが出てくるって知ってました？
そして何より、氷上でより良いパフォーマンスをするために、もし半分人間で半分動物に変身できるとしたら何を選びますか？

タイラー：
自分の名前は猿の科学者にぴったりの名前ですね（笑。
動物なら…半分人間で半分クマを選びます。
だって、クマは最高の人生を送っているから。
冬の間ずっと居心地の良い巣穴で眠り、サーモンの刺身やベリー（私の好物です）を好きなだけ食べれる。
しかも彼らにちょっかいを出す人はいないし、氷の上でも大きな力を発揮するでしょう。
クマだったら、きっとたくさんのシュートをブロックできるだろうし。

Tyler Rockwell Interview
Q :
What was the process of signing with the Yokohama Grits?
Tyler :
I have been saying that I was going to play hockey in Japan since I was twelve years old. After college, I realized that I could play professionally. I wanted to use hockey to see the world in North America and Europe. With that being said, Japan was always the goal and being here has been a dream come true for me.
Through mutual connections, I got in contact with one of the owners of the team in the summer of 2024. From there I was able to connect with our general manager Takashi Mikoshiba. After a couple months of emailing and zoom meetings regarding expectations, dual-career, etc., I was offered a contract with the Yokohama GRITS and signed it immediately.
Q :
You scored a goal in your first game, how did it feel? Was it a weight off your back or just business as usual?
Tyler :
Scoring in your first game on a new team is definitely a huge plus. Being rewarded with the winning goal after a summer of hard training is a great feeling. The GRITS getting a win the first game of the season made me very proud of all the guys on the team.
Q :
The shoot out game winning goal, was one of the most exciting plays of the year. How did it feel?
Tyler :
It’s a great feeling that Yuji-san had the confidence in me, as a defenseman, to be chosen for the shootout. I am relatively confident with my go-to move on a penalty shot but when I was waiting for the ref to blow the whistle I could definitely feel it in my stomach.
When I scored, I felt so excited that we got five out six points on the weekend. However, it was bittersweet because we conceded two goals in the last two minutes to get ourselves in that situation.
Q :
As a defensive player you already have three goals in four games, Do you see yourself as an offensive defenseman?
Tyler :
I still see myself as a two-way defenseman. I make sure that I take care of my defensive game first. Where I excel is in my ability to transition the puck from defense to offense so that we spend more time in the offensive zone.
Q :
Are you planning on attacking the net all season long?
Tyler :
Of course! On the GRITS, we need more of a “shoot first” mentality. Attacking the net with a purpose then opens up chances for playmaking.
Q :
The team and you are off to a fantastic start but you still have some of the top teams left. How high are you and your team’s confidence going into games like Ice Bucks, Red Eagles, and Korea?
Tyler :
I would say, we are going into the games with Ice Bucks, Red Eagles, and Korea with the confidence that we can win on any given night. These teams have historically been very successful but I do believe that we can get some wins against them and qualify for playoffs.
Q :
What is your proudest moment in college at Michigan Tech Huskies?
Tyler :
As a freshman, it is always hard to get playing time. My first year, I did not play much, but I put in so much work all year and summer. Countless hours of practice on the ice and in the gym. From the start of my sophomore year, through my senior year, I didn’t miss a single game or and my role grew each year. This taught me, first hand, to focus on the process and never lose sight of your goals.
Q :
You had the honor to play in the ECHL, What was your time like with the Kalamazoo Wings?
Tyler : Kalamazoo taught me how to “bring it” every night. In this league, we would have games in four out of five nights, in four different cities. The travel on the bus consists of long hours in the middle of the night, trying to get some rest before you play again the next night. I am grateful that I learned how to give 100% effort even when I am mentally and physically at 25%.
The league itself is very physical and competitive from everyone trying to get to the next level.
Q :
In Ligue Magnus, your team Marseille (awesome logo and jerseys) made the playoffs for the first time in your pro career. What was the atmosphere like and what did you learn from the experience?
Tyler :
The support and atmosphere in Marseille was (and still is) incredible. I had an amazing experience in France and cannot say enough good things about that country and organization. Marseille was in its inaugural year of being in the top league in France so the expectations were very low for us going into the season. However, we had a great year and placed fifth out of twelve teams. We ended up taking Bordeaux — who went to the finals — to overtime in Game 7.
Q :
The Yokohama Grits are only a few years old and never got 3rd place or higher, the team looks better now than ever. Do you think you bring something to the team with that playoff experience?
Tyler :
Yes, I think my four years of pro experience in Europe and North America will help us take that next step. That is one of the reasons why I was brought in! I can exchange different perspectives and knowledge with the GRITS guys so that we can add dimensions to our game.
Q :
You played for Michigan Tech, ECHL, Europe and more. In only a handful of games how would you compare the Asia League to the other leagues you played in?
Tyler :
The Asia League has a unique playstyle to it. Most players are just as skilled and talented as players in North America or Europe. I would say the Asia League boasts better skaters here than any league I have played in. North America has much more size and strength on average. Back home I was always the smallest player by far!
Q :
A lot of foreigners who come to Japan have different feelings about living here. How has moving to Japan been for you?
Tyler :
I had high expectations coming into Japan. This country has exceeded my expectations in every regard! I can honestly say that I love the food, the culture, and the team. Every day here is a blessing to me and I’m trying to make the most of this opportunity.
Q :
What is your favorite part of Yokohama so far?
Tyler :
Outside of anything relating to hockey and food, I loved going to my first Baystars game. It was such an amazing atmosphere and the Baystars beat the Giants in a comeback win!
I also stumbled upon my first Japanese Idol group performing in front of Landmark Tower. I ended up watching for an hour as the crowd was absolutely electric!
Q :
Favorite Japanese food you have had while here?
Tyler :
- Sushi Favorites: Salmon, Tuna, Inari
- Gyu-Katsu
- Yi-Chang dan dan noodles (team sponsor)!!
- Shabu-Shabu
- Grilled Mackerel
My list of favorite foods is so long, but these are some of my top choices, for sure.
Q :
Besides Alex Rauter most North Americans and Europeans only stay for one year or less, with such a hot start here we hope you follow in Alex’s footsteps and here for multiple seasons. Do you have any plans for the future or just taking it one day at a time?
Tyler :
Right now, I am taking it one day at a time. I have truly loved every day here. My intentions are to make the GRITS the premier team in Japan. We will see what the future holds but hopefully, it includes more years with the Yokohama GRITS!
Q :
What team mates have you built a good relationship with in the short time you have played here?
Tyler :
The GRITS are such a great program because EVERY guy on the team has made an effort to become close with me. To name a few, Alex Rauter has been so welcoming showing me around and him being a fellow American makes it easy for our relationship. Everyone loves Roy Suzuki because he’s hilarious. Kai Tomita, our goaltender, has also been so helpful for my transition into the team.
Q :
What is team chemistry like in the locker room?
Tyler :
Chemistry is great in the locker room and it shows on the ice! A cohesive team is crucial in having a successful time over the course of the season.
Q :
What hobbies / passions do you have off the Ice?
Tyler :
I love to go on walks with my wife, Frankie. At home, I’m the cook and she’s the baker. We also enjoy exploring new places and Japan has so much to offer.
Q :
Did you know, when you google you a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character pops up? And the more important question is if you could mutate into half human and half animal which one would you choose to be more dominant on the ice?
Tyler :
Tyler Rockwell is a great name for a monkey scientist. However, I would choose half human and half bear. Bears live THE life. They sleep in a cozy den all winter. They eat as much salmon sashimi and berries (some of my favorite foods) as they can. Nobody messes with bears either. They would also be a huge force on the ice. I would block many shots as a bear.
