昨日、プロレス界は真の偉人を失いました。

ドリー・ファンク・Jr.が2026年8月4日、フロリダ州オカラのホスピスケアにおいて、85歳で静かに息を引き取りました。
妻マルティさんが訃報を確認し、WWE・NWA・全日本プロレス、そして世界中のファンから追悼の声が溢れています。

1941年2月3日生まれ。ドリー・ファンク・Sr.の息子であり、故テリー・ファンクの兄として、プロレス史上最も重要なファミリーの一角を担ってきた人物です。
60年以上にわたるキャリアは今もなお、世界中のプロレスに息づいています。

チャンピオンとしての軌跡

ドリーの最大の栄誉は、1969年2月11日に訪れました。
フロリダ州タンパにてジーン・キニスキーを破り、NWA世界ヘビー級王座を戴冠。
その後、実に1,563日間にわたって王座を守り続けました。
これはルー・テーズに次ぐNWA史上2番目の長期政権として今も語り継がれています。
1973年5月24日、ハーリー・レイスに王座を明け渡すまで、彼はその「黄金の10ポンド」を誰にも渡しませんでした。

トレーナーとしての功績

ドリーの影響力は、リング上での実績以上に、指導者として発揮されたのかもしれません。
ファンキン・ドージョー、そして後にフロリダ・オカラで開いたファンキング・コンサバトリーを通じて、彼は数多くのスターを育て上げました。

三沢が1981年に全日本プロレスの道場に入門した際、ドリーは主なトレーナーの一人として、ジャイアント馬場らと共に若き才能を育てました。
後にドリーは三沢を「私の弟子であり、対戦相手であり、そして良き友人」と表現し、長年にわたって何十回となくリングで向き合ったと語っています。
全日本の長年の選手兼コーチとして、ドリーは三沢をはじめ、小橋建太、川田利明、秋山準といった次世代の選手たちと密接に関わり続けました。
そして、後に「四天王時代」を象徴する、テクニカルで激しい打撃を交えたスタイルを彼らに伝えていったのです。
三沢が日本を代表する偉大なチャンピオンへと成長していく過程でも、二人の間には互いに対する深い敬意が保たれていました。

私はアメリカ・フロリダと日本で数回、ドリーにお会いしたことがありますが、いつも優しく接してくださいました。
プロモーターをしていた頃には、彼が育てた選手たちとアメリカン・コンバット・レスリングでご一緒する機会もありました。
特に、彼のスクール出身のカズン・デイルとはよく仕事をしました。
デイルは本当にプロフェッショナルで、ラルフ・モスカとのハードコアマッチは今でも語り草です。
あの試合たちが、会社の成長にも大きく貢献してくれました。
横浜や東京でドリーの試合を観たときは、日本人ファンが彼をどれほど愛しているのかを実感し、とても誇らしく感じました。
ファンの皆さんがドリーに示していた敬意と愛情は、特別なものでした。
1970年代から1980年代の横浜文化体育館、そして後の横浜アリーナやラジアントホールでの登場でも、観客はいつもドリーを「自分たちのヒーロー」のように温かく迎えていました。

70代、80代になっても、ドリーは日本のリングに上がり続け、真のレジェンドだけが受ける特別な歓声に包まれていました。

Dory Funk Jr.: A True Wrestling Legend

Yesterday the wrestling world lost one of its absolute greats.
Dory Funk Jr. passed away on August 4, 2026, at the age of 85 while under hospice care in Ocala, Florida.
His wife Marti confirmed the news, and tributes have poured in from WWE, the NWA, All Japan Pro Wrestling, and fans across the globe.

Born February 3, 1941, Dory was the son of Dory Funk Sr. and older brother of the late Terry Funk.
Together they formed one of the most important families in professional wrestling history.
Dory’s career stretched more than six decades, and his influence can still be felt today.

The Champion

Dory’s crowning achievement came on February 11, 1969, when he defeated Gene Kiniski in Tampa to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
He held the title for an incredible 1,563 days — the second-longest uninterrupted reign in NWA history, behind only Lou Thesz.
He finally dropped the belt to Harley Race on May 24, 1973.

 

Beyond the “Ten Pounds of Gold,” Dory collected a long list of major titles, including:

  • NWA International Heavyweight Championship (3 times)

  • WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship

  • CWA World Heavyweight Championship

  • NWA Florida Heavyweight Championship (4 times)

  • NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship (2 times)

  • Multiple tag team titles, most often with his brother Terry (NWA International Tag Team, WWC World Tag Team, and many others)

He also won the AJPW World’s Strongest Tag Determination League with Terry in 1977, 1979, and 1982.

Dory’s impact as a teacher may be even greater than his in-ring accomplishments.
Through the Funkin’ Dojo and later the Funking Conservatory in Ocala, he trained an incredible list of stars, including:

  • Kurt Angle

  • Edge

  • Christian

  • Matt & Jeff Hardy

  • Lita

  • Mickie James

  • Mark Henry

  • Rhyno

  • Christopher Daniels

  • Chris Sabin

From Japan, his students and pupils included Jumbo Tsuruta (his first major trainee, sent by Giant Baba to Amarillo), Osamu Nishimura, Genichiro Tenryu, Masanobu Fuchi, and many of All Japan’s young lions during the 1980s and 1990s.

Dory Funk Jr. played a key early role in the development of Mitsuharu Misawa.
When Misawa entered the All Japan Pro Wrestling dojo in 1981, Dory was one of his main trainers, helping shape the young prospect alongside Giant Baba and others.
Funk later described Misawa as “my trainee, my opponent, and a good friend,” noting that they wrestled each other dozens of times over the years.
As AJPW’s longtime player-coach, Dory continued working closely with Misawa and the rest of the young generation (including Kobashi, Kawada, and Akiyama), passing on the technical, hard-hitting style that would define the Four Pillars era.
Their connection remained one of mutual respect throughout Misawa’s rise to becoming one of Japan’s greatest champions.

I met him a few times in Florida, USA and Japan and he was always kind to me.

I got to work with some of the wrestlers he trained in American Combat Wrestling when I was a promoter.
I especially got to work with Cousin Dale from his school.
Dale was the ultimate professional and had some classic hardcore matches with Ralph Mosca.
Those matches helped our company grow.

When I saw him wrestle in Yokohama and Tokyo I was so proud of how much the Japanese fans loved him.
The respect and affection they showed Dory was something special.

Whether it was at Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium in the 1970s and 1980s or later appearances at Yokohama Arena and Radiant Hall, the crowd always treated him like one of their own.

  • July 28, 1970 – Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium

  • November 29, 1971 – Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium (with Dick Murdoch against Antonio Inoki & Seiji Sakaguchi)

  • April 24, 1981 – Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium (Funk Brothers vs. Baba & Jumbo Tsuruta)

  • April 25, 1984 – Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium (losing the PWF Tag Titles to Brody & Hansen)

  • December 12, 1984 – Real World Tag League draw with Terry against Harley Race & Nick Bockwinkel

  • November 23, 1999 – Yokohama Arena (FMW 10th Anniversary with Terry)

  • November 28, 2017 – Yokohama Radiant Hall (one of his later multi-man tags)

Even in his 70s and 80s, Dory still stepped into Japanese rings and received the kind of reception reserved only for true legends.

A Lasting Legacy

Dory Funk Jr. was more than a champion and more than a trainer.
He was a gentleman, a technician, a bridge between American and Japanese wrestling, and a mentor who quietly shaped generations of talent.
From the dusty territories of Texas and Florida to the packed arenas of Tokyo and Yokohama, he left his mark everywhere he went.
