Shota Imanaga : From Yokohama star to MLB success
Imanaga, born September 1, 1993 in Kitakyushu, was taken by the BayStars in the first round of the 2015 NPB draft out of Komazawa University.
Over eight seasons (2016–2023) he posted a 64-50 record with a 3.18 ERA, 1,002⅔ innings, and 1,021 strikeouts. He developed into a reliable front-line starter known for a lively fastball and sharp splitter.
Key highlights in Yokohama include a strong rookie year (8-9, 2.93 ERA), a 13-win 2019 All-Star campaign, and a career-best 2.26 ERA in 2022.
That season he threw the franchise’s first no-hitter in 52 years, blanking the Nippon-Ham Fighters 2-0 on June 7 with nine strikeouts and just one walk.
In 2023 he led the Central League in strikeouts (174) while going 7-4 with a 2.80 ERA and earning another All-Star nod before the BayStars posted him for MLB.
He also contributed to Japan’s WBC title that year.
Shota Imanaga | 2023 Highlights
Three seasons in Chicago
Imanaga signed a four-year, $53 million deal with the Cubs ahead of 2024.
His MLB debut was electric: 15-3 with a 2.91 ERA, 174 strikeouts in 173 1⁄3 innings, an All-Star selection, fifth-place Cy Young finish, and All-MLB Second Team honors.
He also started a combined no-hitter against the Pirates in September. 2025 brought a hamstring injury and more home runs allowed, resulting in a 9-8, 3.73 ERA in 25 starts.
After the Cubs declined options and he turned down a player option, he accepted a one-year qualifying offer (~$22 million) to return for 2026.
In 2026 he stayed healthy for a full season—32 starts, 174⅓ innings, 11-10, 3.77 ERA, 174 strikeouts, and a 1.10 WHIP.
Walks stayed low, but home runs (35) remained an issue.
Career MLB numbers through three seasons: 35-21, 3.45 ERA, 465 strikeouts in 492⅓ innings.
He has established himself as a steady mid-rotation arm with plus command and swing-and-miss stuff.

Shota Imanaga : Could he return to the BayStars?
The free-agent market is focused on MLB.
Analysts project something in the neighborhood of three years and around $69 million (roughly $23 million average annual value), with the Cubs, Astros, Giants, and Padres among the teams linked to him.
His consistent innings, low walk rate, and proven big-league success make him attractive in a thin starting-pitching class.
That said, a return to Yokohama is not impossible and would generate enormous excitement.
At 33, Imanaga still has years of effective pitching left, and NPB’s style and ballpark environments could suit his profile.
The emotional pull is real—he spent his formative professional years with the BayStars, delivered signature moments (including that no-hitter), and remains fondly remembered as “Sensei” by fans.
A homecoming would give the BayStars an immediate high-end lefty starter and a marketing boost while allowing him to pitch in a familiar environment closer to family.
The practical hurdles are significant. MLB salaries at his projected level far exceed typical NPB contracts, even for top Japanese stars.
Any return would likely require a unique deal, strong personal motivation (family, lifestyle, or a desire to chase a Japan Series title in Yokohama), or a shorter commitment.
There has been no public indication yet that Imanaga or the BayStars are prioritizing such a move; the conversation so far centers on MLB options.
Still, the fan reaction to the free-agency news shows the appetite is there.
For a club that has mixed results with foreign arms and is always looking for difference-makers, the idea of bringing back one of their own who has proven himself at the highest level is compelling.
Whether Imanaga stays in the majors or finds his way back to Yokohama Stadium, his journey from BayStars draft pick to MLB All-Star is already a success story.
For now, fans on both sides of the Pacific will be watching where the left-hander lands next—and many in Yokohama will keep hoping the next chapter includes a return.
