横浜グリッツが創設された時からのメンバーである、菊池秀治一代目キャプテンにインタビューに答えていただきました。

まだ知名度が無かった頃のグリッツの貴重なメンバーの一人。
一ホッケーファンとして、切り込んだ質問もいたしました。

菊池秀治一代目キャプテンとのインタビュー

質問：
横浜グリッツの拡張チームと契約した時のお気持ちは？

菊池さん：
日本のトップリーグであるアジアリーグの新しい歴史の当事者になれることが嬉しかった。
今までの自身の経験の全てをチームに伝える責任、そして新しいチャレンジができることにわくわくしていた。

 

質問：
どのような経緯を経て契約に至ったのでしょうか？

菊池さん：
30歳の時に自身のビジネスキャリアのことを考え選手キャリアを引退した。
ホッケーだけでなく多くのスポーツでアスリートの引退後のビジネスキャリアに問題があることを感じており、自身がそのロールモデルになれるよう取り組んだ。
32歳の頃に臼井オーナー、御子柴GMと出会うことがあり、デュアルキャリアのアジアリーグチームを作りたいから協力して欲しいと伝えられた。
デュアルキャリアのチームに可能性を感じ、私が取り組みたい問題と同じだった為、ジョインした。

 

質問：
グリッツというフランチャイズのキャプテンに選出された過程と理由を教えてください。

菊池さん：
シーズンが始まる前から苦しむシーズンになることは予想ができた。
その苦しいファーストシーズンの中で少しでも、早くアジアリーグのレベルに追いついてもらいたい気持ちが強かった。
どんな状況であろうと諦めない気持ちを持つ準備はできていたのでキャプテンの要請を承諾した。
非常に光栄なことで、今も誇りに思っている。

 

質問：
グリッツの最初のシーズンは新しいファンも是非知ってほしい特殊な環境下で行われました。
最初の数戦はコーチがiPadを使ったり、コロナの影響で観戦に来たい人も躊躇する中行われたものでした。
そんな中菊池さんはどんなアスリートもチームも体験したことのない環境で活躍されていましたが、当時の心情を聞いてもよろしいでしょうか？

菊池さん：
コロナは誰にも予想できないこと、私達だけでなく多くの人が苦しい想いをした期間。
世界中が初めての経験をした。私達もその時に1人1人ができることを実践した。
試合を開催する為に努力をしてくれた人が大勢おり、大変な時期に観戦に来てくれたファンも多くいてくれた。
その全てに今は感謝しており、とても貴重で尊い経験をしたと感じている。
ケネディコーチは素晴らしいコーチで、もし私がまた現役で選手としてプレーできるのであれば、彼のもとでプレーをしたい。
私達がもっと彼の要望に応えることができたら、素晴らしい結果を残すことだろう。

 

質問：
横浜グリッツのメンバーとして活躍していた時、最も誇りに思ったことは何ですか？

菊池さん：
GRITSに関わってくれたスタッフ、選手、ファンの方々と素敵な時間を過ごせたこと。
シーズン毎に結果もステップアップできたこと。
GRITSの可能性を信じてジョインしてくれた選手が活躍してくれたこと。

 

質問：
横浜グリッツにいたときに一番後悔していたことは？

菊池さん：
セカンドシーズン、サードシーズンの選手紹介写真で髪をセットしなかったこと。

 

質問：
今期の横浜グリッツの活躍をどう予想しますか？

菊池さん：
ベテランの選手と若い選手のバランスが良く、また攻守のバランスも過去のシーズンと比べて良いと感じる。
各選手が各々の仕事を徹底すれば必ず良い結果が出る。

 

質問：
貴方にとって横浜グリッツとは？

菊池さん：
多くの素晴らしい思い出を与えてくれた場所。

 

質問：
日本においてのアイスホッケー界はどんな未来を迎えると思いますか？

菊池さん：
アイスホッケーに関わる方々が少しずつ同じ方向を見始めている。
簡単なことではないが競技レベルも競技環境、そしてエンターテイメントとしても成熟していく未来はあると感じる。
一方で日本のホッケーが成長すると同じか、それ以上に他スポーツや他の娯楽環境も成長している。
日本のホッケーに関わる人々はカテゴリー問わず一致団結する必要がある。
そして新しい文化や環境を拒むことなく吸収し、共存する道を探さなければならない。

 

質問：
リーグ全体を俯瞰した時に改善できそうな点などは思い浮かびますか？

菊池さん：
リーグの運営力は努力しなければならなく、リーグ運営を成功させる為の人員が足りていない。
1番最初にお金をかけないといけないところはリーグの人材確保。
スポンサー営業、マーケティング、広報、この辺りは特に力を入れたい。
IIHFがアジアに注目している中、競技の活性化に向けて流れはきている。
連盟、リーグ、チーム、そして選手がこの機を逃すわけにはいかない。

 

質問：
横浜グリッツが創立されたときからいたチームメイトの中で、共に戦って楽しかったのは誰ですか？

菊池さん：
チームメイトみんなが好きだったが、私がアジアリーグでプレーした3チーム全てでチームメイトになった、今や引退した熊谷豪士選手には特別な想いがある。
お互い引退したが、これからも家族であることには変わらない。
ファーストシーズンからGRITSに加入してくれてとても感謝している。

 

質問：
コーセーアイスアリーナが満席で観客も大盛り上がりの時、グリッツがプレーする1日目からファン層を拡大させるために多くの犠牲を払ってきたことをどう思いますか？

菊池さん：
私は応援されることより応援することのほうが大変だと感じる。
時間、お金、そしてエネルギーをチーム、競技、選手にかけてくれることに感謝し、簡単なことではないことを理解すべき。
選手はより責任を持ち、1プレー1プレーに全てを賭け競技に取り組んでほしい。
そしてその犠牲以上のものを生み出してほしい。

 

質問：
横浜グリッツの未来はどんな姿になっていると思いますか？

菊池さん：
日本を代表するスポーツチームになることを願っている。

 

質問：
ファンや企業ができる最も有効な横浜グリッツへの支援は何ですか？

菊池さん：
共感・期待感。

 

質問：
アスリートの力になるウェブサイトをお持ちですよね。
サイトの詳細、創立したきっかけ、そして現状をお教えいただけませんか？

菊池さん：
スポーツで評価されることで社会的に評価されることができるアスリートは少ない。
多くの競技でもっと沢山の評価をされるべきアスリートがいる。
そのようなアスリートに少しでも注目が集まり、評価され、競技環境をさらに良くして欲しい。
その想いからプロジェクトをスタートさせた。
まだまだスモールビジネスではあるが、諦めず多くの人に想いが届くよう努力する。

 

質問：
横浜グリッツのファンへ日本語・英語両方でメッセージを送るとしたら、どんな内容になりますか？

菊池さん：

菊池さん：

アスリートとして氷上に立たなくなった今、一番恋しいと思うことは何ですか？

菊池さん：
アスリートとしてパフォーマンスを出せない以上、恋しいと感じることはない。
全てが素晴らしい思い出。
役割は変わるが日本のホッケーの為に変わらず努力する。

We interviewed original captain Shuji Kikuchi, a member of the Yokohama Grits since their founding.

He was one of the valuable members of the Grits when they were still unknown to sports fans in Yokohama.
As a hockey fan, we asked him some in-depth questions.

Grits fans, you won’t want to miss out on this!

Interview with Shuji Kikuchi

Question :
What was it like being signed to the Yokohama Grits expansion team?

Kikuchi :
I was happy to be a part of the new history of the Asia League, which is Japan’s top league.
I was excited about the responsibility of passing on all of my experiences to the team,  and the opportunity to take on a new challenge.

 

Question :
How did the process happen?

Kikuchi :
At the age of 30, I retired from being an athlete to consider my business career.
I felt that there were issues with post-retirement business careers for athletes, not only in hockey but in many sports, and I worked to become a role model for them.
When I was 32, I met owner Usui and GM Mikoshiba, who asked me for help in creating a dual-career Asia League team.
I saw potential in this, and joined because it tackled with the same issue I wanted to address.

 

Question :
How and why were you the first captain of the franchise?

Kikuchi :
Even before the season started, I predicted it would be a tough one.
During that difficult first season, I had a strong desire for the team to catch up to the Asia League level as quickly as possible.
I was prepared to never give up, no matter what the situation, so I accepted the request to be captain.
It was a great honor, and I am still proud of it.

 

Question :
The Yokohama Grits’ first season is one many sports fans need to know.
It began during a pandemic, with your coach on an iPad for the first few games, and the launch year saw many fearing the games would arrive. It was a process I feel you did something no athlete or team has ever experienced before.

Kikuchi :
OVID-19 was something no one could have predicted, and it was a difficult period for many people, not just us.
The whole world experienced something new, and we all did what we could at the time.
So many people worked hard to make the games possible, and many fans came to watch during these difficult times.
I’m grateful for all of that, and I feel it was a very valuable and precious experience.
Coach Mike is a great, and if I could be on ice again, I’d like to play under his coaching.
If we could meet his expectations more effectively, I’m sure we’d achieve great results.

 

Question :
What are you most proud of in your time on the Yokohama Grits?

Kikuchi :
Having had wonderful times with the staff, players, and fans involved with GRITS.
I also want to address the athletes who contributed to the team, believing in the possibility the team has.

 

Question :
What is your biggest regret of your time on the Grits?

Kikuchi :
Not having my hair styled properly when taking the player introduction photos for the second and third seasons.

 

Question :
What is your prediction for the Yokohama Grits this season?

Kikuchi :
There’s a good balance between the experienced and young players.
I feel the balance between offense and defense is better than in previous seasons.
If each player does their job properly, good results are sure to follow.

 

Question :
What does GRITS mean to you?

Kikuchi :
A place that has given me so many wonderful memories.

 

Question :
What do you see of the future of ice hockey in Japan?

Kikuchi :
Everyone involved in ice hockey is slowly starting to look at the same direction.
It’s not easy, but I believe there’s a future where the level of competition, the playing environment, and entertainment will mature.
Meanwhile, as hockey in Japan grows, other sports and other entertainment environments are also growing at the same rate, if not more.
Everyone involved in hockey in Japan, regardless of category, needs to unite.
And we need to absorb new cultures and environments without rejecting them, and find ways to coexist with them.

 

Question :
What is something the league can improve?

Kikuchi :
We need to work on improving our league management, since we don’t have enough personnel to successfully manage the league.
The first area we need to spend money on is securing league personnel.
We want to focus particularly on sponsorship sales, marketing, and public relations.
With the IIHF turning its attention to Asia, there is a trend toward revitalizing the sport.
The federation, league, teams, and players cannot miss this opportunity.

 

Question :
Who are some of the Original Grits did you enjoy playing with?

Kikuchi :
I loved all my teammates, but I have a special feeling for Goshi Kumagai, who was my teammate on all three teams I played for in the Asia League.
We’ve both retired, but we’ll always be family.
I’m very grateful that he joined the GRITS from the first season.

 

Question :
When Kose is packed and rocking, how does it make you feel that you sacrificed so much to help the fan base grow from day one?

Kikuchi :
I feel that cheering for someone is harder than being cheered for.
We should be grateful for the time, money, and energy they invest in the team, the sport, and the athletes, and understand that it’s not easy.
I want the athletes to take on more responsibility, putting everything into every play, achievingQ2 more than they sacrificed.

 

Question :
What do you see for the Yokohama Grits future?

Kikuchi :
I hope they become a sports team that represents Japan.

 

Question :
What are things that fans and businesses can do to help the Yokohama Grits?

Kikuchi :
Empathy and anticipation

 

Question :
You made a website to help athletes, what is the site, how did it begin, and how is it going?

Kikuchi :
Few athletes are able to gain social recognition through what they do in the sports world.
There are athletes not just in hockey, but in many sports who deserve more recognition.
I want these athletes to receive attention, recognition, and further improve the overall competitive environment.
That desire led to the start of this project.
Although it’s still a small business, we won’t give up and will work hard to reach as many people as possible.

What message would you want Grits Fans to hear from you in English and Japanese?

Kikuchi :
GRIT – Perseverance

What are you working on in the hockey world, these days?

Kikuchi :
Public Relations Committee Member, Japan Ice Hockey Federation
Secretary General, Japan Ice Hockey Players Association
JAPAN NINJAS Head Coach

 

Question :
What will you miss the most about the game?

Kikuchi :
As long as I can’t perform as an athlete, there is nothing I would miss.
Everything is a wonderful memory to me.
My role will change, but I will continue to work hard for Japanese hockey.
