Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Review
This is the game that inspired the now-famous two-player hit It Takes Two, and I can almost guarantee it will stay with everyone who plays it.
I’m talking about Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
I’m pretty much clueless about video games, apart from sports games. So when BearFriend said, “Let’s try this one,” I had no idea what I was getting into.
Once I started playing, I was confused for a long time, because the controls are unusual: one player controls both brothers at the same time. The left stick moves the older brother, and the right stick moves the younger one. This was praised as highly original when the game came out.
Here’s a fun fact: the game’s director, Josef Fares, started out as a film director. He later went on to make It Takes Two and A Way Out.
Brothers : the world
Nobody in the game speaks a real language, so one of my favorite parts was making up the brothers’ lines as we played.
We’d say something silly in the middle of a serious scene, or have the brothers trade insults.
Everyone who plays can imagine their own relationship between the two.
A game with a similar feel is ICO or Shadow of the Colossus from Japan Studio, but Brothers plays quite differently.
The setting feels medieval, with fantasy creatures like trolls, orcs, and griffins.
Maybe it’s because I watched too many anime and read too many manga as a kid, but I could tell at a glance how to get past each boss or obstacle.
That’s part of the fun.
It may simply be an easy game, but it felt great to watch things play out just the way I’d pictured them.
The Ending of the Two Brothers’ Story…
The game is short, but by the second half I’d grown so attached to the two brothers that I couldn’t get through the ending without tears.
I won’t spoil anything, but there was a stretch where BearFriend and I, who both love to talk, just sat there in silence, staring at the screen.
It’s short, but it was later remade.
The game won the 2014 BAFTA Games Award for Game Innovation and the 2014 D.I.C.E. Award for Downloadable Game of the Year, among others, and plenty of gamers still play it today.
I hope this creator’s ideas never get copied without credit.
No game had ever let you control two characters with the sticks on a single controller, and I hope that innovation keeps being recognized.
It feels less like playing a game and more like watching a movie.
If you haven’t played it yet, you’re lucky, because a one-of-a-kind experience is waiting for you.
Overall rating: 9/10
