Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright Review: A Classic That Still Hits
This game is published by Capcom, a company I love, and I hear it’s been a hugely popular series for ages.
I’ve known about it for years through friends, but I never played it myself. This time, I finally picked it up to play together with BearFriend.
As someone who only ever plays sports games, this is uncharted territory for me once again.
I believe this is a remake of the Game Boy Advance version.
Right from Case 1, someone close to the protagonist gets caught up in a crime, so the story hooks you immediately.
The tutorial character, Prosecutor Auchi, is great too, and the judge’s complete cluelessness is endearing.
One thing I have to say: you might be thinking, “Does Japan’s justice system really decide guilt or innocence in just three days?”
Don’t worry, it’s fiction!
Overseas, the speed of Japanese trials is actually a bit of a meme.
But that just shows how many people know and love this series.
The first case featured in this article wraps up cleanly with no cliffhanger.
The culprit is exposed to the player from the start, and closing in on them bit by bit is really satisfying.
That said, you have to present evidence at the right moments to match the story, so if you like to move fast, it can be a little frustrating.
I’ve already finished the first Ace Attorney game on the YouTube channel Koco Plays, and some of the plot twists made me think, “There’s no way this would happen in real life!” There are also spots where you can’t progress unless you click on a specific place or object, so you’ll need a bit of patience.
Still, that’s exactly what gave it a nostalgic feel, like playing a detective adventure on an old retro PC or Famicom.
The occasional comedy moments were fun too. Overall, I’d give it a 7 out of 10.
The best part, though, is the music. From the investigation scenes to the courtroom exchanges, and especially that surge of excitement when the protagonist gains the upper hand, I don’t think you can get this experience from any other game.
If you don’t mind reading a lot of text, this one is highly recommended.
