決断の瞬間 —数億円を手放してでもNBAへ
そして、困難な選択の時が訪れました。
2024年9月、河村は横浜を離れてメンフィス・グリズリーズとExhibit 10契約を締結。
その後ツーウェイ契約に転換し、日本人選手として史上4人目のNBA選手となりました。
経済的な犠牲は計り知れないものでした。
横浜での最終シーズンの年俸は約2億5,000万円。
日本に残れば年間約5億円規模の報酬も見込めたはずです。
しかし彼が選んだのはツーウェイ契約——初年度は約5,780万円、続くシカゴ・ブルズとの契約では約3,550万円。
手放した報酬の約7分の1です。
それでも河村は一度も揺らぎませんでした。
メンフィスで22試合・シカゴで18試合という限られた出場機会、Gリーグとの往復生活を経ても、その炎は消えませんでした。

レイカーズを離れてクリッパーズと2年2,800万ドル契約を結んだ八村と、河村選手が同じロッカールームでユニフォームを着ることになったのです。

Yuki Kawamura’s Bold Journey : From Yokohama B-Corsairs Star to NBA Dreamer
Yuki Kawamura’s story is pure basketball romance — the small-town kid from Yamaguchi who became Japan’s flashiest point guard, dominated the B.League with the Yokohama B-Corsairs, and then walked away from big money to chase the ultimate dream: the NBA.
The Yokohama Years: Where a Legend Was Built
Kawamura joined the Yokohama B-Corsairs in December 2020 as a special designated player while still at Tokai University.
What followed was a rapid rise that lit up Japanese basketball.By the 2022-23 season, after going fully professional, the 5’7″ (172 cm) PG exploded.
He averaged 19.5 points and a league-leading 8.5 assists, leading Yokohama to its first B.League Championship appearance (semifinals).
That year he swept the awards: Regular Season MVP, Rookie of the Year, Assist Leader, Best Five, and more — a historic six individual honors.
The next season (2023-24) he pushed even higher, averaging 20.9 points and 8.1 assists while repeating as Assist Leader.
In 156 games for the B-Corsairs he poured in nearly 2,600 points and dished out 1,185 assists.
Fans in Yokohama fell in love with his no-look passes, fearless drives, and nonstop energy.
He wasn’t just a star — he was the face of the franchise.
The Leap: Sacrificing Millions for the NBA Dream
Then came the hard choice.
In September 2024, Kawamura left Yokohama to sign an Exhibit 10 deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.
It was converted to a two-way contract, and he made history as the fourth Japanese player in the NBA.
The financial hit was massive.
In his final season with Yokohama he earned around $2.5 million.
He could have stayed in Japan and commanded closer to $5 million annually.
Instead, he took two-way money — roughly $578,000 in his first NBA season and about $355,000 the next with the Chicago Bulls.
That’s roughly one-seventh of what he left behind.Yet Kawamura has never blinked.
Limited NBA minutes (22 games with Memphis, 18 with Chicago) and G League shuttling haven’t dimmed his fire.
This summer he signed another Exhibit 10 training-camp deal — this time with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Reunion in L.A. and a Strong Return with Team Japan
The Clippers move is poetic.
Waiting for him in Los Angeles is fellow Japanese star Rui Hachimura, who signed a two-year, $28 million deal with the Clippers this offseason after leaving the Lakers.
The two national-team teammates are now sharing a locker room, training together, and giving Japanese fans a dream “Japan package” on one NBA roster.
That chemistry is already showing on the international stage.
Both rejoined Team Japan (Akatsuki Japan) this month for the first time in two years.
In exhibition games against South Korea in Tokyo:

August 16: Japan rolled 95-66 (Hachimura rested for management). Kawamura stepped up with a team-high 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.
The duo is now preparing for the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers later this month against Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Kawamura still faces an uphill climb.
An Exhibit 10 deal is a tryout — non-guaranteed, with the possibility of conversion to a two-way or standard contract, or a G League assignment.
