The Tokyo Toe Is On His Way To The NFL: Kansei Matsuzawa’s Journey of Discipline and Dreams
In the world of sports, few stories hit quite like Kansei Matsuzawa’s.
The kid from Japan with a big dream who taught himself to kick on YouTube, hustled for field time with the Fujitsu Frontiers, grinded through junior college in Ohio, and became a consensus All-American at the University of Hawai‘i is now officially an NFL player.
On April 25, 2026, Matsuzawa signed as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders—the same franchise that sparked his wild dream eight years earlier when he sat in the stands as a 19-year-old tourist watching the Raiders play the Rams in Oakland.

The Spark in Oakland
Back in 2018, Matsuzawa was lost.
He had failed his college entrance exams in Japan—twice. No clear direction.
His father, hoping to light a fire under him, sent him on a solo trip to the United States.
One stop: an NFL game.
The energy, the precision, the spectacle of American football hit him like a freight train.
Right then, the “Tokyo Toe” was born. He turned to his father and said he was going to play in the NFL—as a kicker.
Most people would have laughed. Matsuzawa went home and got to work.
YouTube University and the Frontiers Hustle
No coach. No team. No clue. Just pure determination.
Matsuzawa studied Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason Myers on YouTube, broke down every step of his technique, and started practicing in a local park after his daytime shifts at a steakhouse.
He’d kick for 90 minutes, three or four nights a week, under the lights, careful not to disturb the kids playing nearby.
He even taught himself English along the way because he knew the path to the NFL ran through America.
About a year into this solo mission, he reached out to the Fujitsu Frontiers—one of the premier teams in Japan’s X-League.
His offer was simple and bold: “Let me practice on your field. I’ll do anything—run errands, whatever you need.”
The Frontiers said yes.
That connection with the Frontiers became a turning point.
Suddenly he wasn’t training alone. He was around players who lived and breathed the game.
He watched elite practice habits up close, picked the brain of the team’s kicker, and soaked up advice from the American coaches on staff.

The Long Road: Junior College to Hawaii
Matsuzawa turned his highlight tape into an email blast—50 junior colleges in the U.S.
