横浜ベイスターズに恋した米軍兵士 フィリップが語る、野球と横浜への愛
横浜のスポーツやプロレスを熱狂的に応援するファンを探してインタビューを重ねる中で、横浜グリッツのアイスホッケー観戦でフィリップさんと出会うことができました。
アメリカ空軍に所属する彼は、故郷シカゴのチームと、日本での「もう一つのホームチーム」横浜DeNAベイスターズの両方を全力で応援する二刀流ファンです。
ベイスターズの試合では外野席に陣取る姿を見かけることが多く、球場の雰囲気をとことん吸収しながら、日本野球の醍醐味を全身で楽しんでいます。
ココ：
まず自己紹介をお願いします。日本に来たきっかけは？
フィリップ：
アメリカ空軍の配属で日本に来ました。横田基地に赴任することになったんです。
ココ：
もともと野球ファンだったんですか？
フィリップ：
中西部生まれなので、ある程度は野球ファンにならざるを得ないですよね（笑）。
ココ：
MLBはどのチームを応援していましたか？
フィリップ：
シカゴ・カブスです。昔も今もずっとカブス一筋です。
ココ：
横浜DeNAベイスターズのファンになったのはいつ、どんなきっかけでしたか？
フィリップ：
はっきりベイスターズファンになったと言えるのは、2024年8月3日です。
それ以前から今永昇太選手（カブスで今年もノーヒットノーランに貢献した投手）が以前ベイスターズに在籍していたことを知って気になってはいたんですが、その夜、タイラー・オースティン選手が阪神タイガース戦で2本のホームランを打って……あの瞬間に「このチームしかない」と決めました。あの2本のボールはスペイン行きの片道切符でしたね（笑）。
ココ：
ベイスターズファンであることは、あなた個人にとってどんな意味がありますか？
横浜（または日本）での生活にどう馴染んでいますか？
フィリップ：
ベイスターズファンであることで、同じチームを応援する人たちとの繋がりが生まれます。
試合に行くたびに数えきれないほどのファンと出会い、たくさんの友人ができました。
仕事がうまくいかなくても、人生に打ちのめされていても、「次のベイスターズ戦がある」と思えば、全部どうでもよくなる。それくらい大切な存在です。
チームと横浜への思い
ココ：
なぜベイスターズだったんですか？
巨人や阪神など他のNPBチームと比べて、どこが違うと感じますか？
フィリップ：
最初はたまたま元カノの家がベイスターズに近かったというだけで知ったんです（笑）。
でも今永選手のことを知って、そしてあの運命の夜にオースティン選手がホームランを2本打って……もう後戻りできなくなりました。実は一時期、巨人ファンになりかけたこともあったんですが（本気で考えてました）、今は全力で嫌いです。
ブルワーズやカーディナルスより嫌いかもしれません（笑）。
ココ：
ベイスターズへの愛は、横浜という街の体験をどう変えましたか？
フィリップ：
横浜に関係するチームなら何でも応援するようになりましたね。
それだけじゃなくて、ベイスターズのグッズを着て横浜を歩いていると、見知らぬ人から「ベイスターズ好きなの？」って話しかけられることがよくあるんです。
基地のフレンドシップフェスティバルでも2回も声をかけられたし、若い頃にベイスターズの試合を観に行っていたという日本人のおじさんにも出会いました。
「当時のチケットは300円だったよ」って教えてもらいましたよ（笑）。
ココ：
歴代最高のベイスターズ選手は誰ですか？
また、今後が楽しみな選手は？
フィリップ：
歴代最高は今永昇太選手です。
2回のノーヒットノーランへの貢献、野球への情熱、ちょっとおちゃめなキャラクター、そしてシカゴへのどっぷりなじみ方……全部ひっくるめて最高です。
2位はタイラー・オースティン選手、3位はアンソニー・ケイ選手、宮崎敏郎選手、渡会斗生選手の3人が同率です。
今後が楽しみな選手は、ルーキー投手の島田舜哉選手です。
ベイスターズはいままで投手陣に課題がある中で、彼は2登板目・初勝利でイマキュレートイニング（三者三振で3つすべてが三振という完璧な一回）を達成しました。
NPBのルーキーとしては史上2人目、セ・リーグ史上初の快挙です。
これからの彼を見るのが本当に楽しみです。
試合当日とファン文化
ココ：
ベイスターズの試合当日はどんな過ごし方をしていますか？
フィリップ：
平日は仕事前から試合の準備をして、終わり次第できるだけ早くスタジアムへ向かいます。
早く着いたときはフードトラックやミッドタウンで食べ物を調達して、試合中は右翼のスタンディングエリアで観戦しています。
横浜スタジアムでの「俺の定位置」ですね。
ココ：
ベイスターズの応援・応援団文化で一番好きなところは？
決まったチャントやルーティンはありますか？
また、アウェー遠征はどれくらい行きますか？
横浜以外で一番好きな球場は？
フィリップ：
応援文化で一番好きなのは、得点圏にランナーが出た瞬間の雰囲気の変わり方です。
特に接戦だと、あの瞬間の盛り上がりがたまらない。
遠征は色々行きましたよ。
東京近郊の全球場に加えて、ベルーナドーム（自宅から30分なので）や千葉マリンスタジアム、さらには大阪まで足を伸ばして甲子園にも行きました。
横浜以外で一番好きなのはベルーナドームです。
理由は一択、和牛のフラットブレッドピザ（笑）。
日本の球場グルメはあまり得意じゃないんですが、埼玉だけは別格です。
ココ：
横浜スタジアムで体験した中で、一番雰囲気が最高だったのはいつですか？
フィリップ：
2025年のクライマックスシリーズですね。
レギュラーシーズンとは完全に別物の熱量があって、10月の野球が持つあの独特の興奮みたいなものが球場全体を包んでいました。
忘れられない瞬間
ココ：
ベイスターズ史上最高の思い出を教えてください。
フィリップ：
二つあります。
一つ目は去年のクライマックスシリーズでの巨人戦。
2アウトからの逆転劇で、まさに「この試合を制した方が勝ち上がり」という状況での出来事でした。
二つ目も巨人戦で、約1ヶ月前に起きた逆転劇です。
あの試合でいつの間にか「俺はここで観るのが好きだ」という定位置を見つけた瞬間でもありました。
ちなみに知ってましたか？
ゲート8の右入口のすぐ上あたりに、宮崎敏郎選手が打席に入るたびにぬいぐるみのくまのプーさんを踊らせるファンのグループがいるんですよ（笑）。
ココ：
2024年の日本シリーズはどんな気持ちで見ていましたか？
フィリップ：
あの頃はまだわりとライトなファンで、チケットに1万数千円は出せないと思っていたんです。
でも今は大阪まで見に行くために数万円出しますから……隔世の感があります（笑）。
それでも応援しているチームが日本一になったのは嬉しかった。
今は「あの時もっと行っておけばよかった」と本気で後悔しています。
だから今は当時より遥かに多くの試合に行くようにしています。
「もしかしたら歴史的な瞬間に立ち会えるかもしれない」と思うと、行かない理由がないんですよね。
ココ：
スタンドで起きた面白い、感動的な、忘れられないエピソードがあれば教えてください。
フィリップ：
色々ありすぎて（笑）。
横浜スタジアムで見ず知らずのファンにドリンクをおごってもらったこと、東京ドームではアイスモナカをおごってもらったこと、戸柱恭孝選手のサヨナラで周りのファンと腕を組んで勝利の歌を歌ったこと、渡会斗生選手のランニングホームランの瞬間に周りと自然とグループハグになったこと……。
あと一度、試合中にオリジナルドリンクを考案したこともあります（笑）。
本当に、球場にはたくさんの人生と体験が詰まっています。
つらい時期を乗り越えるのを助けてくれたのも、球場という場所でした。
個人的な想い
ココ：
ベイスターズを応援することで、忍耐・忠誠心・コミュニティについて何か学びましたか？
フィリップ：
忍耐や忠誠心については……カブスがすでに全部教えてくれているので（笑）。
でもベイスターズを通じて改めて実感したのは、「同じチームを応援する人たちの中にいることの心地よさ」です。
同じ喜びと悔しさをリアルタイムで共有できる仲間がいることは、やっぱり特別なことだと思います。
ココ：
熱狂的なファンであることと、仕事や家族・他の趣味とのバランスはどうやって取っていますか？
フィリップ：
仕事と家族が最優先なのは変わりません。
でもその邪魔にならない限り、ベイスターズの試合に行くことが最優先事項になります。
ココ：
過去・現在を問わず、ベイスターズの選手と1対1で話せるとしたら、誰を選んでどんなことを聞きますか？
フィリップ：
正直あまり考えたことがなかったんですが……やっぱり今永選手ですね。
シカゴとここまでガッツリ繋がろうとした理由を聞いてみたいです。
インタビューの最初の一言が「レッツゴー・カブス！」だったり、登場曲がシカゴ・ブルズの「チェルシー・ダガー」だったり、一体なぜそこまでするのかと（笑）。
ココ：
「ベイスターズファンになろうか迷っている」という人へ、一言メッセージをどうぞ。
フィリップ：
やりましょう！
今の成績は気にしないでください。
どうせ後半戦になれば強くなるんで（笑）。
ココ：
今後数シーズン、チームへの期待を教えてください。
フィリップ：
安定した強さを見せ続けてほしい。
そしてセ・リーグ優勝ともう一度の日本シリーズ制覇。
あとは島田舜哉選手と渡会斗生選手がこれからどんなキャリアを築いていくのか、それを見届けるのが今から楽しみでたまりません。

BayStars fan Philip interview
While hunting for passionate Yokohama sports and wrestling fans to interview, I had the pleasure of meeting Philip at a Yokohama Grits Hockey game.
A proud member of the U.S. Air Force, Philip is a dual loyalist — cheering hard for both the Chicago teams back home and his adopted Yokohama BayStars here in Japan.
You’ll most likely spot him in the outfield seats at BayStars games, where he’s a regular presence soaking in the atmosphere and living the Japanese baseball experience to the fullest.
Tell us a bit about yourself —
Koco :
What brought you to Japan?
Phillip :
I came to Japan for work through the US Air Force who decided to put me in Yokota.
Koco:
Did you grow up a baseball fan?
Phillip :
Having been born in the midwest it’s kinda hard to not be a baseball fan of some degree.
Koco :
Who is/was your MLB Team growing up?
Phillip :
My MLB team has and always will be the Chicago Cubs.
Koco :
When and how did you become a Yokohama BayStars fan?
Phillip :
I became a Baystars fan for certain on August 3rd 2024, I had previously been considering it due to Shota Imanaga having previously played for them (as he is a pitcher for the Cubs who threw a combined no hitter earlier that year), but Tyler Austin on that night sealed the deal with a two homerun game against the Hanshin Tigers, from that point forward they were my team in Japan.
Koco :
What does being a BayStars fan mean to you personally?
How does it fit into your life in Yokohama (or Japan)?
Phillip :
Being a Baystars fan makes me feel a connection with my fellow Baystars fans, I’ve met countless fans and made many friends due to going to games and it’s fun to go to games, because even when work sucks, and life is kicking you down, as long as I have the prospect of going to a Baystars game, it all just feels silly.

Koco :
Why the BayStars specifically?
What makes them different from other NPB teams (Giants, Tigers, etc.) in your eyes?
Phillip :
I was originally introduced to the Baystars through an ex who just happened to live closer to them, then once I learned that Imanaga played for them, and then the fateful night where Austin gave a one way ticket for Spain to 2 baseballs, I couldn’t go back, also while I did almost become a Giants fan (I was thinking it) I currently loathe them with every fiber of my being (even more than the Brewers and Cardinals).
Koco :
How has your love for the BayStars changed the way you experience Yokohama as a city?
Phillip :
It changed the way I experience Yokohama because now when it comes to choosing teams to support I always lean Yokohama, additionally whenever I go to Yokohama wearing something Baystars related, I might get stopped by someone who wants to talk to me about the Baystars, in fact it even happened on base during the friendship festival where I was stopped on 2 occasions by customers, and once by a Japanese national who used to go to Baystars game when he was younger, and the price was 300 yen for a ticket.
Koco :
Favorite BayStars player of all time (past or present) and why?
Any current player you’re especially excited about?
Phillip :
Shota Imanaga, I think with 2 no hitters, a clear passion for the sport, his goofball attitude, and the way he ingrained himself to Chicago gives him that spot for favorite player all time, 2nd would be Tyler Austin, 3rd is a tie between Anthony Kay, Toshiro Miyazaki, and Ryuki Watarai, but when it comes to future players I’m excited about, it would have to be rookie pitcher Shunya Shimada, historically the Baystars have struggled with pitching, and now we have a guy who in his 2nd start and 1st win, threw an immaculate inning, the 2nd by a rookie in NPB, and 1st in Central league history, I think it’s going to be fun watching him in the future.
Game Day & Fan Culture
Koco :
Walk us through a typical BayStars game day for you.
Phillip :
On a weekday I’m usually preparing for the game before I go to work so I can make it to the stadium as soon as possible, but depending on how early I am I’ll get some food from a food truck or from Midtown, then I’ll typically be in the right field standing section during the game, my unofficial home spot in Yokohama Stadium.
Koco :
What’s your favorite part of the BayStars cheering/ōendan culture? Do you have a go-to chant or ritual?
How often do you go to away games? Favorite stadium to visit outside of Yokohama?
Phillip :
My favorite part of the cheering culture is definitely the mood shift when a runner is in scoring position, the moment gets more exciting at that moment, especially in a close game.
I’ve gone to many different stadium so far, every stadium in the tokyo area to include the Belluna dome (which I live 30 minutes away from) and the marine stadium, and I’ve even gone as far as osaka to watch a game in the koshien, but my favorite stadium outside of Yokohama would be the Belluna dome, simply because of the wagyu flatbread pizza (I don’t tend to like the stadium food that’s sold at the stadium in Japan but they’re definitely doing something right in saitama).
Koco :
What’s the best atmosphere you’ve ever experienced at Yokohama Stadium?
Phillip :
The best atmosphere I’ve experienced at Yokohama Stadium was during the 2025 Climax series, the entire vibe changed quite a bit from the normal regular season game to a more excited vibe that October baseball tends to bring out.
Memorable Moments
Koco :
What’s your all-time favorite BayStars memory (a big win, comeback, player moment, etc.)?
Phillip :
There’s two, the first one is the two out comeback in the Climax series last year against the giants, with a possible winner take all game three looming overhead, and the other is also against the Giants, but it was a comeback that happened about a month ago also against the Giants, only in that moment I figured out where my favorite section to sit (or rather stand) was (also did you know that right above the right entrance of gate 8, there is a row of fans that bring a stuffed Winnie the pooh, whom they make dance whenever Toshiro Miyazaki is at bat).
Koco :
How did you feel during the 2024 Japan Series run?
Phillip :
Honestly back then I was less invested and was more of a casual fan given how I did not want to spend 100 dollars on a ticket, as compared to now where I’ll spend 500 dollars to see them in Osaka, but I was still happy to see that the team I was supporting won, and nowadays I feel immense regret in that decision, which is also why I go to many more games now as compared to my first year here, because you never know if you might witness history.
Koco :
Any funny, emotional, or unforgettable stories from the stands involving other fans?
Phillip :
There have been a few, I once had a guy pay for my drink in Yokohama, another guy paid for an ice cream sandwich at the tokyo dome, during a walkoff by Yasutaka Tobashira a group of us locked arms and started singing the victory song, I was part of a group hug when Ryuki Watarai hit an inside the park homerun, and I also invented a drink at a game once, so a lot of life and experiences has happened at the ballgame for me (it also helped me get past some bad times).
Deeper / Personal Reflections
Koco :
Has supporting the BayStars taught you anything about perseverance, loyalty, or community?
Phillip :
I don’t think the Baystars have taught me anything about perseverance or loyalty that the Cubs haven’t already taught me, but I have learned that it always feels good to be around a group of people that support the same team as you, who are going through the same highs and lows as you in that moment.
Koco :
How do you balance being a huge fan with the rest of your life (work, family, other hobbies)?
Phillip :
My schedule is almost always going to put work and family first, however if it doesn’t get in the way, then making it to the Baystars game is my priority.
Koco :
If you could sit down with any BayStars player (past or present) for a conversation, who would it be and what would you ask?
Phillip :
I actually don’t know, I’ve never thought about this that much, but if I had to choose then it would be Imanaga and I would ask why he did so much to connect himself to Chicago sports (his opening line in his interview being the line to go cubs go, having Chelsea dagger as his walkup song, etc).
Koco :
What message would you give to someone who’s thinking about becoming a BayStars fan?
Phillip :
Do it, don’t pay attention to their record right now, they get alot better in the 2nd half anyway.
Koco :
Looking ahead — what are your hopes for the team in the next few seasons?
Phillip :
Consistency, a central league championship along with another Japan Series, and to see how Shunya Shimada’s and Ryuki Watarai’s career develops.
