デイブ・Kocoの野球ドリームチーム＆野球人生

僕は野球を愛しています。
でも、野球は僕を愛し返してくれていたのでしょうか？

リトルリーグではスタッフォード・インディアンスでチャンピオンシップを獲得しましたが、ほとんど試合に出ることはありませんでした。
そのことが、野球との関係をよく物語っているような気がします。
心の底から何かを愛しても、相手がそれを返してくれないことはあるものです。

その後、別の道で成功を収めましたが、何度三振してもこの素晴らしいスポーツを観る愛情は消えませんでした。

野球と共に育った少年時代

1980年代、野球を見ながら育ちました。子どもの頃は特定のお気に入りチームはなかったものの、好きな選手はたくさんいました。

子どもの頃はいろんな大人に預けられることが多く、いろんな人が野球の試合に連れて行ってくれました。
「どのチームが好きなの？」と聞かれるたびに、連れて行ってくれた大人が好きなチームを答えていました。

なぜか？

「違うチームが好きと言ったら、もう連れて行ってもらえないかもしれない」と思っていたからです。笑

振り返ってみると、特定のチームに忠実だったわけではありませんでした。
忠実だったのは、野球そのものに対してでした。

大人になるにつれて、野球への愛情はさらに深まっていきました。
好きな選手を見るためにこっそり試合に出かけたり、球場に忍び込んだりしたこともありました。
とにかく野球の近くにいたかったんです。

海兵隊から野球のプレスボックスへ

やがて海兵隊に入隊し、歩兵として服務しました。

服務中、除隊後にやりたいことのイメージが頭の中にありました。
海兵隊の歩兵として生き延びることができたら—できれば体が動く状態で—何らかのスポーツ記者になりたいと思っていました。
それが野球に近づくための道だと考えていたんです。

周りはみんなお気に入りのチームを持っているのに、自分にはまだありませんでした。
そんな時、ついにチームを選ぶ機会が訪れます。

1998年、タンパベイ・デビルレイズとアリゾナ・ダイヤモンドバックスがMLBに誕生しました。数年後にスポーツ記者を目指す中で、アリゾナかタンパベイかという選択肢が目の前に現れました。

迷う理由はほとんどありませんでした。

デビルレイズは誕生したばかりの新球団。
初日から自分のチームとして応援しようと決めました。

シーズンチケットを手に入れ、チームの取材を始めました。
野球はもはや観るだけのものではなくなりました。
ついに、野球の一部になれると感じた瞬間でした。

さらにフィラデルフィア・フィリーズのマイナーリーグ傘下チーム、クリアウォーター・スレッシャーズのアナウンサーも務めることになりました。
在学していた大学の近くに位置していたこともあって縁を感じました。

野球をただ夢見ていただけの自分が、思いもしなかったチャンスを次々と掴んでいました。

野球が僕を日本へ連れて行った

やがて人生は、まったく予想もしていなかった場所へと僕を導きました。
日本に移住したのです。

ここに来た頃は、周りのほとんど全員が読売ジャイアンツのファンでした。
子どもの頃と同じ状況に逆戻りです—みんなには「自分のチーム」があるのに、自分にはない。

でも日本は別のものを与えてくれました。

松井秀喜がメジャーリーグに渡る前に、直接会う機会に恵まれたのです。

当時、松井がアメリカでここまで大きな存在になるとは想像もしていませんでした。
でも日本野球を観続け、松井やイチローがMLBでその名を刻んでいく姿を見ていると、野球という世界がぐっと狭く、身近なものに感じられました。

日本でのキャリアはまた別の方向にも発展しました。
翻訳会社を立ち上げて後に売却したのですが、その事業が大きくなった理由の一つが、イチローがMLBで巨大なスターになったことでした。

野球はいつも、気づけば自分の人生に入り込んでいました。

もしかしたら、野球も僕を愛してくれていたのかもしれない

偉大な野球選手になるという夢は叶いませんでした。
リトルリーグでもスターではなかったし、プロとして野球人生を歩んだわけでもない。
道のりには三振がたくさんありました。

でも、見方が違ったのかもしれません。

野球は偉大な選手に育てることで愛を返す必要はなかった。

野球は僕に思い出をくれました。チャンスをくれました。
子どもの頃の野球観戦から軍隊へ、タンパベイのプレスボックスからクリアウォーターのマイナーリーグへ、そしてはるか日本まで連れて行ってくれました。

スタンドから、プレスボックスから、マイクの前から、様々な場所でこのゲームを体験しました。
憧れの選手と会い、時代を代表する偉大なプレイヤーたちの姿を目の当たりにしました。

では、野球は僕を愛してくれていたのか？
たぶん、そうだったと思います。
ただ、最初に想像していたような形では、なかったけれど。

それでも今でも、野球を観続けています。

人生も野球みたいに、思い通りにいかないことはあります。東京で人生が崩れ落ちた時期があって、横浜で立て直しました。

子どもの頃、盗塁が大好きでした。
そしてリッキー以上に盗塁を極めた選手はいません。

三人称で自分のことを語るエピソードは今でも笑えますし、彼が野球を心の底から愛していたことはプレーのすべてから伝わってきました。

リッキー・ヘンダーソンは、MLBの歴史上最高のリードオフヒッターにして最高の盗塁王として広く認められている選手です。
1979年から2003年までの25年間にわたる輝かしいキャリアを誇り、オークランド・アスレチックスでデビューした後、ニューヨーク・ヤンキース・トロント・ブルージェイズ・サンディエゴ・パドレス・アナハイム・エンゼルス・ニューヨーク・メッツ・シアトル・マリナーズ・ボストン・レッドソックス・ロサンゼルス・ドジャースとMLBを渡り歩きました。

「盗塁の帝王（マン・オブ・スティール）」の異名を持つヘンダーソンは、通算盗塁数1,406個と通算得点2,295点というMLB歴代最多記録を保有し、1982年に打ち立てたシーズン130盗塁という単一シーズン記録も未だ破られていません。
10回のオールスター選出、1990年アメリカンリーグMVP受賞、ワールドシリーズ制覇2回（1989年オークランド・1993年トロント）、ゴールドグラブ賞・シルバースラッガー賞の受賞歴も持ち、2009年には野球殿堂入りを果たしました。

実は彼が読売ジャイアンツでプレーしていた頃、本人に会ったことがあります。
その時は彼が選手だとは知らなくて、「野球をやるのが好きなんだ」と言うから、「僕はホッケーが好き」と返したんです。
すると「どのチームでやってるの？」と聞かれたので、「子どもの頃の話で、今じゃないですよ」と答えました。

そのやりとりをしていた場所の真後ろに、ジャイアンツのユニフォームを着た本人の巨大ポスターが飾られていて……彼が自分のポスターを指差した瞬間、笑いが止まりませんでした。
これまで会った選手の中でも、特別に気さくで優しい人でした。

そして海兵隊時代には、ビデオゲームの野球で松井でホームランをかっ飛ばしながら「ゴジラ！！！」と叫んで友人たちをボコボコにしていたのも今となっては良い思い出です。笑

松井秀喜—愛称「ゴジラ」—は日本プロ野球とメジャーリーグを架け橋となった伝説的なキャリアを築きました。

1993年から2002年まで読売ジャイアンツで活躍し、セントラルリーグMVPを3度受賞。日本で最も恐れられた強打者の一人として君臨した後、2003年にニューヨーク・ヤンキースと契約し即戦力として定着しました。

ヤンキース・ロサンゼルス・エンゼルス・オークランド・アスレチックス・タンパベイ・レイズとの10シーズン（2003〜2012年）で、打率.282・175本塁打・760打点を記録。2度のオールスター選出を果たし、2009年のワールドシリーズではヤンキースの27度目の優勝に貢献するMVPパフォーマンスを披露しました。
パワー・安定感・プロフェッショナリズムを兼ね備えた松井は、メジャーで成功を収めた日本人野手として最高の一人として今も語り継がれています。

RF（ライト）　イチロー

野球記者をしていた頃、何度かインタビューする機会に恵まれましたが、いつも部屋の中で一番クールな存在でした。
あの速さと美しいスイング—史上最高のヒッターの一人です。

そしてイチローの人気があったからこそ、日本でスポーツ翻訳会社を立ち上げて売却することができました。
その恩は一生忘れません。

イチロー鈴木は野球史上最もアイコニックで先駆的な日本人選手の一人です。
1992年から2000年までオリックス・ブルーウェーブで活躍し、パシフィックリーグMVPを3年連続受賞・首位打者7回獲得という輝かしい実績を残した後、日本人野手として初めてMLBで主力となった選手です。

2001年に27歳でシアトル・マリナーズでデビューするや、打率.350・242安打・56盗塁を記録してアメリカンリーグ新人王とMVPを同時受賞という衝撃のデビューを飾りました。
マリナーズを主戦場に、ニューヨーク・ヤンキースとマイアミ・マーリンズでもプレーした19年間のMLBキャリアで、通算打率.311・3,089安打・509盗塁を積み上げました。
2004年にはシーズン262安打というMLB記録を樹立し、10年連続200安打という前人未到の偉業も達成しています。

10度のオールスター選出・10度のゴールドグラブ賞受賞を誇り、NPBとMLBを合わせた通算安打数は4,367本。
2025年には日本生まれの選手として初めて全米野球殿堂入りを果たしました。

3塁　エヴァン・ロンゴリア

タンパ・レイズは僕の一番好きなMLBチームで、ロンゴはその中でも特に好きだった選手です。
フロリダでも東京ドームでも彼のプレーを観る機会がありました。
東京ドームでの試合はMLBオールスターチームvs日本オールスターチームという特別な一戦でした。

ロンゴはその試合でスタメンではなく、僕は周りの日本人ファンと一緒に地元チームを応援していました。
「ロンゴさえ見られれば完璧な1日なのに」と友人に言っていた矢先、最終イニングでついに代打で登場！

周りの日本人ファンの多くはエヴァン・ロンゴリアが誰なのか知らなかったけれど、その夜ずっと飲みながら騒いでいた僕のテンションに引っ張られて、気づけばそのセクション全体が一緒に「ロンゴ！ロンゴ！」と叫んでいました。
そしてロンゴがヒットを放った瞬間、全員で大騒ぎ。
スポーツって、本当に人の最高の部分を引き出してくれますよね。

エヴァン・ロンゴリアは「ロンゴ」の愛称で親しまれ、16年間にわたってMLBを代表するサードベースマンとして活躍した選手です。
2008年にタンパベイ・レイズでデビューするや即座にアメリカンリーグ新人王を獲得し、同シーズンにはレイズ史上初のワールドシリーズ出場に貢献しました。レイズでの10年間（2008〜2017年）はフランチャイズの顔として君臨し、試合数・本塁打・打点など数多くのチーム記録を樹立。
オールスター3回選出・ゴールドグラブ賞3回・シルバースラッガー賞受賞という輝かしい実績を残しました。

その後サンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツ（2018〜2022年）・アリゾナ・ダイヤモンドバックス（2023年）でもプレーし、アリゾナでは2度目のワールドシリーズにも出場。通算打率.264・342本塁打・1,159打点という素晴らしい成績でキャリアを終えました。
2025年にはレイズの一員として正式に引退を発表し、2026年にはチームの殿堂入りと背番号3の永久欠番が決定しました。

SS（ショート） デレク・ジーター

そのポジションで最高の選手だったかと言えば、必ずしもそうではないかもしれません。
でも誰よりも魂を込めてそのポジションを守り続けた選手は、間違いなくジーターです。
グラウンドの内外で、真の「キャプテン」としての振る舞いを体現していました。

デレク・ジーターは「キャプテン」の愛称で知られ、20年間（1995〜2014年）のメジャーリーグキャリアをニューヨーク・ヤンキースの象徴的なショートストップとして全うした、球団史上最も称えられた選手の一人です。

1995年にデビューし1996年からレギュラーの座を掴むと、アメリカンリーグ新人王を獲得しながらヤンキースの18年ぶりのワールドシリーズ制覇に貢献。
20年間のキャリアで通算打率.310・3,465安打（歴代6位）・260本塁打・358盗塁を積み上げ、オールスター14回選出・ゴールドグラブ賞5回・シルバースラッガー賞5回という輝かしい実績を残しました。

ワールドシリーズ5回制覇（1996・1998〜2000・2009年）、2000年ワールドシリーズMVP受賞、そして2003年にはチームキャプテンに就任。ヤンキースの通算安打をはじめ数々の球団記録も保有しています。
2020年には初回投票でほぼ全票に近い支持を受けて野球殿堂入りを果たし、ジーターの名は今も卓越したプレー・リーダーシップ・ポストシーズンでの勝負強さの象徴として語り継がれています。

セカンド　牧 秀悟

歴代ベイスターズの中で一番好きな選手です。
横浜でのキャリアをすべて見届けられることを心から願っています。
どんなプレッシャーの場面でも、どんな状況でも、常に冷静でいられる選手。
彼がスタメンに名を連ねている限り、どんな試合でもまだ勝てると思えます。

牧秀悟は横浜DeNAベイスターズの強打の右打ち内野手で、2021年のデビュー以来NPBを代表する新世代スターの一人として確固たる地位を築いています。
中央大学から2020年NPBドラフト2位で指名された長野県出身のこの選手は、ルーキーイヤーから打率.314・22本塁打・セ・リーグ新記録となる35二塁打を記録し、NPB史上初のルーキーによるサイクルヒット達成という歴史的快挙を成し遂げました。

その後のシーズンでも安定したパワーと高いコンタクト能力を維持し、複数シーズンで20本塁打以上をマーク。
2022〜2025年の4年連続オールスター選出、セカンド部門でのベストナイン2回受賞、2023年セ・リーグ最多安打・打点王タイトルを獲得しています。
2024年の横浜DeNAベイスターズ日本シリーズ制覇の立役者の一人でもあり、国際舞台でも2023年のワールド・ベースボール・クラシックで日本代表として優勝に貢献しました。

2026年初頭時点での通算打率.294・130本塁打以上という数字が示す通り、セカンドとファーストを守れる守備のユーティリティ性と攻撃力を兼ね備えた、エネルギッシュなプレースタイルが牧秀悟の魅力です。

1塁　ドン・マッティングリー

子どもの頃の野球のヒーローといえば、「ドニー・ベースボール」でした。
彼のスイングを真似しようと必死に練習したものです。
子どもながらに「なんてカッコいい選手なんだ」と思っていました。
リトルリーグでも野球ゲームでも、ヒーローの真似をして初球はじっくり見逃すのが僕のこだわりでした。
海兵隊に入って初めての給料をもらった時、真っ先に買ったのが彼のユニフォームです。

ドン・マッティングリーは「ドニー・ベースボール」の愛称で親しまれ、14年間のメジャーリーグキャリア（1982〜1995年）をニューヨーク・ヤンキースの絶対的なファーストベースマンとして全うした選手です。

1982年のデビューから打者・守備者として球界屈指の存在へと成長し、1984年には打率.343でアメリカンリーグ首位打者を獲得。
1985年にはリーグトップの145打点を記録してALMVPを受賞しました。
1984年から1989年にかけて6回のオールスター選出、ファースト部門でMLB記録となる9回のゴールドグラブ賞・シルバースラッガー賞3回を受賞。通算打率.307・2,153安打・222本塁打・1,099打点という輝かしい成績を残しました。

抜群の守備力・美しい左打ちのスイング・全盛期の安定した活躍で知られ、ヤンキースのキャプテンも務めました。
背番号23はヤンキースによって永久欠番に指定され、モニュメント・パークにもプレートが設置されています。
背中の故障が全盛期を縮め、現役時代にワールドシリーズ制覇を果たすことはできませんでしたが、マッティングリーはヤンキース史上最も愛される選手の一人として今も語り継がれています。

阿部 慎之助

野球の歴史には素晴らしいキャッチャーが数多くいます。
ゲイリー・カーターやマイク・ピアッツァも頭に浮かびましたが、最終的に選んだのは阿部慎之助でした。

どんな場面でも結果を出すことのできる、タフなリーダーシップを持った選手でした。
監督としてのキャリアが短命に終わってしまったことが残念でなりません。
彼のプレーは本当に多くのファンを幸せにしてくれました。
今、幸せな場所にいてほしいと心から願っています。

阿部慎之助は19年間のNPBキャリア（2001〜2019年）を読売ジャイアンツの中心捕手・長年のキャプテンとして全うした、球団史上最高の選手の一人です。

2000年のドラフトで中央大学から1位指名を受け2001年にデビュー。
左打ちの捕手として類まれな打撃力を誇り、NPB史上最も打てる捕手の一人として名を刻みました。
通算打率.284・2,132安打・406本塁打・1,285打点という歴史的な成績を残しています。

日本シリーズ3回制覇（2002・2009・2012年）を果たし、2009年には日本シリーズMVPを獲得。
2012年には打率.340で首位打者と打点王に輝き、セントラルリーグMVPにも選出されました。
ベストナイン9回・ゴールドグラブ賞4回の受賞歴を持ち、2007年から2014年にかけてはチームキャプテンを務め、その存在感でジャイアンツと日本プロ野球界全体の歴史に確固たる足跡を残しました。
引退後は指導者・監督としてチームを導きました。

監督　ルー・ピネラ

素晴らしい監督が多すぎて選ぶのが本当に難しかったのですが、子どもの頃からずっと「野球が投げかけるどんな問いにも答えを持っている」と感じさせてくれる存在がルー・ピニエラでした。チームへの愛情を隠すことなく全力でぶつかり、「この人のためなら戦える」と思わせるリーダーシップの塊のような人でした。

「スウィート・ルー」の愛称で知られるルー・ピニエラは、外野手として18年間の輝かしいMLB現役キャリアを歩んだ後、野球界屈指の名監督として歴史に名を刻んだ人物です。

ボルティモア・オリオールズとクリーブランド・インディアンスで短期間プレーした後、新設のカンザスシティ・ロイヤルズで頭角を現し、1969年にアメリカンリーグ新人王を獲得。1974年にニューヨーク・ヤンキースへトレードされ、1970年代後半のヤンキース黄金期を支える主力として活躍しました。通算打率.291・1,705安打を記録し、1972年にはオールスターにも選出。1977年と1978年のワールドシリーズ制覇にも貢献しました。

1984年に現役を引退後は監督としての道を歩み始め、ヤンキース・シンシナティ・レッズ（1990年ワールドシリーズ制覇）・シアトル・マリナーズ（2001年にMLB記録となる116勝を達成、複数回プレーオフ出場）・タンパベイ・デビルレイズ・シカゴ・カブスを指揮。通算1,835勝・年間最優秀監督賞3回受賞という輝かしい監督キャリアを築き上げました。

東京ジャイアンツと横浜DeNAベイスターズでのラミちゃんのプレーを生で観ることができました。
ずっと大ファンでした。

そして現役引退後、アジアリーグアイスホッケーと横浜グリッツのために尽力する姿を通じて、縁あって直接お会いできる機会に恵まれました。
本当にラッキーだったと思っています。

グラウンドの外でも、現役時代と変わらない情熱で働き続けています。数多くのチャリティー活動にも積極的に取り組んでいます。
この殿堂入り選手が、日本でアイスホッケーを成功させるというほぼ不可能に見える挑戦を成し遂げることができるのか—目が離せません。

アレックス・ラミレス—「ラミちゃん」の愛称で知られるベネズエラ出身の外野手は、MLBで一定の実績を残した後、日本プロ野球で伝説的なスターへと昇り詰めた選手です。

1998年から2000年にかけてクリーブランド・インディアンスとピッツバーグ・パイレーツで短期間プレーし、打率.259・12本塁打を記録。その後日本に渡り、ヤクルトスワローズ（2001〜2007年）・読売ジャイアンツ（2008〜2011年）・横浜DeNAベイスターズ（2012〜2013年）でその才能を開花させました。

13シーズンにわたるNPBキャリアで通算打率.301・2,017安打（外国人選手初の2,000安打達成）・380本塁打・1,272打点という歴史的な成績を残しました。
セントラルリーグMVPを2度受賞（2008・2009年）し、首位打者・本塁打王・打点王のタイトルも複数回獲得。
2001年と2009年の日本シリーズ制覇にも貢献しました。2023年には日本野球殿堂入りを果たし、NPB史上最も偉大な外国人選手の一人として今もその名を轟かせています。

レジー・ジャクソン

あらゆるスポーツを通じて、「ここ一番」という場面でレジー・ジャクソン以上に頼りになるアスリートはいませんでした。
「ミスター・オクトーバー」は子どもの頃の憧れのヒーローです。
どんな状況でも動じない、とにかくクールな存在でした。
学生時代はテストがある日には必ず彼のユニフォームを着て臨んでいました。

レジー・ジャクソンは「ミスター・オクトーバー」として名高く、1967年から1987年までの21シーズンにわたって野球界最高の勝負強さとカリスマ性を誇るパワーヒッターとして殿堂入りキャリアを築いた選手です。

カンザスシティ/オークランド・アスレチックスでキャリアをスタートさせ、1972年から1974年にかけてチームを3年連続ワールドシリーズ制覇へと導きました。
1973年にはホームランと打点でリーグトップに立ち、アメリカンリーグMVPを受賞。1976年にボルティモア・オリオールズで1シーズンを過ごした後、ニューヨーク・ヤンキースに加入。
1977年のワールドシリーズ第6戦で3打席連続ホームランという伝説的なパフォーマンスを披露し、1977・1978年と2度のワールドシリーズ制覇・ワールドシリーズMVP受賞という歴史に刻まれる活躍を見せました。
その後カリフォルニア・エンゼルスで輝きを放ち、オークランドに戻って現役を終えました。

オールスター14回選出、通算打率.262・2,584安打・563本塁打・1,702打点という輝かしい成績を残し、1993年に野球殿堂入りを果たしました。

マイク・シュミット

彼はフィラデルフィアの英雄でした。
幼い頃、彼が引退を発表した時のことを今でも鮮明に覚えています。
引退会見で何度も言葉に詰まって泣き崩れる場面が、テレビの「ジェパディ！」を何度も中断して速報で流れていました。
夢を追い続けてきた男が、その夢から離れなければならない瞬間ほど悲しいものはない—幼いながらにそのことを学んだ出来事でした。

マイク・シュミットは野球史上最高のサードベースマンの一人として広く認められており、18年間のメジャーリーグキャリア（1972〜1989年）をフィラデルフィア・フィリーズ一筋で全うした選手です。

圧倒的な長打力と卓越した守備力を誇り、ナショナルリーグの本塁打王をMLB記録となる8度獲得。通算548本塁打・2,234安打・1,595打点・打率.267という歴史的な成績を残しました。

NLMVPを3度受賞（1980・1981・1986年）し、オールスター12回選出・ゴールドグラブ賞10回・シルバースラッガー賞6回という輝かしい実績を誇ります。
1980年にはフィリーズを球団初のワールドシリーズ制覇へと導き、打率.381・2本塁打という圧倒的なパフォーマンスでシリーズMVPを受賞。

殿堂入りにふさわしい選手ですが、本来はタンパベイ・レイズの選手として殿堂入りすべきだったと思っています。でもMLBが彼の意志を尊重しませんでした。幸運にも、タンパベイ・デビルレイズのホームゲームでウェイド・ボッグスの通算3,000本安打達成の瞬間を生で目撃することができました。新球団には彼のような大スターが必要でした。

ちなみに「イッツ・オールウェイズ・サニー・イン・フィラデルフィア」のエピソード「ギャング・ビーツ・ボッグス」では、登場人物たちがウェイド・ボッグスの伝説的なビール飲みの記録——大陸横断フライト中に50〜70本とも言われる——を超えようとするという話が描かれています。ボッグス本人は後に、実際の合計は1日を通じて約107本（フライト前の飲み物・飛行機内・乗り換え・着陸後も含む）で、ボストンからLAへのフライト中だけで約73本を飲んだと明かしています。この話には実話の裏付けがあり、チームメートたちも彼の驚異的なお酒の強さを長年語り継いでいました。そして翌日の試合では2打数2安打でダブルを2本打ったというから、さらに驚きです。

「チキンマン」の愛称で知られるウェイド・ボッグスは、1982年から1999年までの18年間にわたって時代を代表する純粋なヒッターとして輝き続けた選手です。ボストン・レッドソックスでデビューし、1983年から1988年にかけてアメリカンリーグ首位打者を5度獲得。15シーズンで打率3割以上をマークし、通算打率.328・3,010安打という歴史的な成績を残しました。

すべてのプレーに全力を尽くし、フィールドに立つたびに野球への愛情があふれていました。

彼の野球界追放については、当初は「仕方ない」と思っていました。
でもステロイド時代が来て、バド・セリグが殿堂入りしたことで、その考えは変わりました。
セリーグはステロイド全盛期の責任者としてコミッショナーを務めていた人物です。
明らかに事態を把握していながら何もしなかった人間が殿堂入りを果たす—これほど野球界の腐敗を象徴する出来事はないと思っています。

「チャーリー・ハッスル」の愛称で知られるピート・ローズは、通算4,256安打というMLB歴代最多安打記録を保持し、野球史上最も偉大で最も物議を醸した選手の一人です。

1963年にシンシナティ・レッズでデビューしナショナルリーグ新人王を獲得。24年間のキャリア（1963〜1986年）の大半をレッズで過ごし、フィラデルフィア・フィリーズ・モントリオール・エクスポズを経て選手兼監督としてレッズに復帰しました。
スイッチヒッターとして知られる「ひたすら全力プレー」のスタイルで、通算打率.303・オールスター17回選出・首位打者3回・1973年NLMVPを受賞。
ワールドシリーズ3回制覇（1975・1976年はレッズ、1980年はフィリーズ）を果たし、1975年にはワールドシリーズMVPも獲得。試合数・打席数でも記録を樹立しました。

野球賭博による永久追放処分が生涯にわたって殿堂入りへの道を閉ざしましたが、2024年に死去した後、2025年に追放処分が解除され、殿堂入り候補資格を得ることになりました。

筒香 嘉智

筒香は僕の大好きな2つの球団—MLBのタンパベイ・レイズと日本の横浜DeNAベイスターズ—両方でプレーした、おそらく唯一の選手です。
どちらの「自分の国」でも同じ選手を応援できるというのは、本当に特別な感覚です。横浜でのプレーを応援するのがたまらなく楽しい。
これからも長く横浜でプレーし続けてほしいと心から願っています。

筒香嘉智は強打の左打ちファースト兼外野手で、主に横浜DeNAベイスターズで輝かしいキャリアを築いてきた選手です。
2009年のNPBドラフトで横浜高校から全体1位指名を受け、2010年にデビュー。2010年代中盤にスターへと成長し、2016年シーズンには打率.322・44本塁打・110打点でセ・リーグの三冠に迫る圧倒的な成績を残しました。
NPBでの在籍期間中に複数回のオールスター選出とベストナイン受賞を重ね、球団を代表する強打者の一人として君臨しました。

2019年シーズンまで安定した成績を残した後、タンパベイ・レイズと契約しMLBに挑戦。レイズ・ロサンゼルス・ドジャース・ピッツバーグ・パイレーツで3シーズン（2020〜2022年）プレーしましたが、打率.197・18本塁打と苦しいMLB生活となりました。
2024年にベイスターズへ復帰し、その年の日本シリーズ制覇に貢献。現在もチームに欠かせないベテランとして存在感を示しています。

大谷翔平は史上最高の野球選手です。これは議論の余地すらありません。
北海道日本ハムファイターズ時代の彼を日本で生で見られたことは、本当に幸運でした。
日本の野球仲間たちが口を揃えて「とんでもない才能だ」と言っていました。
彼が世界とMLBを席巻する前から、その凄さを目撃していたんです。

野茂・イチロー・松井がそうだったように、北米の専門家たちの多くは当初「過大評価だ」と言っていました。
でも今、そんなことを言う人は誰もいません。

大谷翔平は野球史上最高の二刀流選手として広く認められており、2018年にロサンゼルス・エンゼルスでMLBデビューして以来、野球という競技そのものを再定義し続けています。
北海道日本ハムファイターズで圧倒的な存在感を示した後に渡米し、投手としても打者・指名打者としても球界最高峰のパフォーマンスを見せています。

2018年のアメリカンリーグ新人王を皮切りに、MVP4回受賞（2021・2023年にAL、2024・2025年にNL）という前人未到の偉業を達成。2024年にはロサンゼルス・ドジャースでMLB史上初の「50-50シーズン」を達成（54本塁打・59盗塁）し、2025年にはドジャースのワールドシリーズ制覇に貢献してNLCSMVPを受賞しました。

近所の子どもたちは全員「ロケット」に憧れていました。
速球とスピードといえばロジャー・クレメンスの名前が真っ先に浮かぶ時代でした。
いとことSNES（スーパーファミコン）で彼のゲームをよくプレイしていたものです。
ケン・グリフィーJr.の野球ゲームほどの出来ではなかったけれど、彼がカバーに載っているというだけで十分な理由でした。

「ロケット」の愛称で知られるロジャー・クレメンスは、1984年から2007年までの24年間にわたってMLB史上最も圧倒的で輝かしい実績を残した投手の一人です。

ボストン・レッドソックスでデビューし、1986年にはアメリカンリーグMVPとサイ・ヤング賞を同一シーズンで受賞。その後MLB記録となる7度のサイ・ヤング賞を獲得しました。
ボストンでの活躍を経て、トロント・ブルージェイズ（1997〜1998年に2年連続で投手三冠を達成）・ニューヨーク・ヤンキース（1999・2000年のワールドシリーズ制覇に貢献）・ヒューストン・アストロズでもその実力を発揮。
通算354勝・4,672奪三振（歴代3位）・防御率3.12・オールスター11回選出という圧倒的な成績を残しました。

野茂 英雄

僕と同世代の野球ファンなら、みんな野茂に夢中になって、裏庭でトルネード投法を真似していたはずです。
彼は真の野球のパイオニアです。
多くのものを犠牲にし、リスクを冒して、日本と北米という二つの国の野球のあり方を根本から変えてしまいました。

野茂がいなければ、イチローも松井も今永も大谷も村上も、そしてこれからの日本人野球選手も存在し得なかったかもしれません。

「トルネード」の愛称で知られる野茂英雄は、独特のコークスクリュー投法でMLBに旋風を巻き起こし、現代の日本人スターがメジャーで活躍する道を切り開いた先駆者です。

1990年から1994年まで近鉄バファローズでNPBの頂点に君臨し、デビューシーズンにパシフィックリーグMVP・沢村賞・新人王・投手三冠という前人未到の快挙を達成。
1995年にロサンゼルス・ドジャースと契約し渡米すると、その年のナショナルリーグ新人王を獲得。オールスターゲームの先発投手を務め、奪三振王にも輝きました。

ドジャースをはじめ複数の球団で13シーズンにわたってMLBでプレーし、通算123勝109敗・防御率4.24・1,918奪三振を記録。
打者有利で知られるクアーズ・フィールドでのノーヒットノーランを含む2度の快挙も成し遂げました。
2014年に日本野球殿堂入りを果たし、後世の日本人選手たちへの道を切り開いたパイオニアとして今もその偉大な功績が讃えられています。

投手　ブレイク・スネル

ブレイク・スネルは僕の歴代タンパベイ・レイズのピッチャーの中で一番好きな選手です。
生きている限り、ずっとこの問いが頭から離れないでしょう。
「あの試合でスネルを続投させていたら、レイズはワールドシリーズを制覇できていたのか？」あの瞬間と答えを、僕たちは奪われてしまいました。

その後パドレスからもドジャースへと引き抜かれ、複数回のチャンピオンシップを勝ち取りました。
これもすべて、無能でケチなレイズのGMのせいです。
レイズファンであることは苦痛を伴うものですが、あの一瞬だけは本当に優勝を信じることができた。
でもその夢は、チームの成功よりも自分のプライドを優先した監督とGMに壊されてしまいました。

Twitchのライブ配信中にトレードのニュースを知ったあの瞬間、今でも鮮明に覚えています。
本当に打ちのめされました。

「スネルジラ」の愛称で知られるブレイク・スネルは、2016年のタンパベイ・レイズでのデビュー以来、野球界屈指の左腕として地位を確立してきた投手です。
2018年にはリーグトップの防御率1.89・21勝という圧倒的な成績でアメリカンリーグのサイ・ヤング賞を受賞して一気にブレイク。サンディエゴ・パドレスへのトレード後、2023年にはナショナルリーグトップの防御率2.25でキャリア2度目のサイ・ヤング賞を獲得しました。
2024年にはサンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツでノーヒットノーランを達成し、その後ロサンゼルス・ドジャースに加入して2025年のワールドシリーズ制覇に貢献。2026年シーズン序盤時点での通算成績は約81勝63敗・防御率3.16・1,450奪三振以上と、レイズ・パドレス・ジャイアンツ・ドジャースでの活躍を通じてオールスター選出・複数回の防御率タイトルを誇る球界を代表する左腕です。

SP（先発投手）ランディ・ジョンソン

歴代最も威圧感のある投手の一人です。
最も有名なのは、速球で鳥を粉砕してしまったあの衝撃的な瞬間でしょう。EA Sports MVP Baseballでは先発でも抑えでも彼を使い続けていました。
チャンスさえあれば必ずマウンドに送り込んでいたものです。

「ビッグ・ユニット」の愛称で知られるランディ・ジョンソンは、身長210cmという威圧的な体格から繰り出す圧倒的なピッチングで、1988年から2009年までの22年間にわたってMLB史上最も支配的な左腕投手の一人として君臨しました。

モントリオール・エクスポズで短期間プレーした後、シアトル・マリナーズで開花し1995年のアメリカンリーグ・サイ・ヤング賞を受賞。
その後アリゾナ・ダイヤモンドバックスで全盛期を迎え、1999年から2002年にかけてナショナルリーグ・サイ・ヤング賞を4年連続で獲得という前人未到の偉業を達成。
2001年のワールドシリーズではチームを初優勝へと導き、共同MVPに輝きました。2004年には当時最年長記録となる完全試合も達成しています。

クローザー　マリアノ・リベラ

史上最高のクローザーです。
彼がブルペンから歩いてくる姿を見るだけで、ヤンキースの勝利がほぼ確定したも同然でした。ニューヨークの数々の優勝チームに欠かせない存在でした。

「モ」そして「ザ・サンドマン」の愛称で知られるマリアノ・リベラは、野球史上最高のクローザーとして広く認められており、19年間のMLBキャリア（1995〜2013年）をニューヨーク・ヤンキース一筋で全うした選手です。

切れ味鋭いカットファストボールでクローザーという役割を再定義し、MLB記録となる通算652セーブを積み上げながら防御率2.21という驚異的な数字を残しました。
オールスター13回選出・ワールドシリーズ5回制覇（1996・1998〜2000・2009年）を誇り、ポストシーズンではほぼ無敵の存在として防御率0.70・96試合登板42セーブという信じられない成績を記録。

I loved baseball.
But did baseball love me back?

I won a Little League championship with the Stafford Indians, but I barely played.
That probably says a lot about my relationship with the game.
Sometimes you can love something with all your heart, and it simply doesn’t love you back.

I went on to find success in other things, but striking out over and over again never killed my love for watching the great sport.

Growing Up With Baseball

I grew up in the 1980s watching baseball.
I didn’t really have a favorite team as a kid, but I had plenty of favorite players.

I was passed around quite a bit as a kid, and different adults would take us to baseball games.
Whenever someone asked me what my favorite team was, I would usually tell them whatever team the adult taking me happened to like.

Why?

Because I figured if I told them I liked a different team, they might stop taking me to games!

Looking back, I guess I wasn’t exactly loyal to a team. I was loyal to baseball.

As I got older, that love of the game only grew. There were times when I’d sneak out to games and even sneak into stadiums just to see some of my favorite players. I wanted to be around baseball any way I could.

From the Marines to the Baseball Press Box

Eventually, I joined the Marine Corps and served in the infantry.

While I was serving, I had an idea of what I wanted to do after the military.
If I could somehow make it out of the Marine Corps infantry healthy—or at least healthy enough—I wanted to become some kind of sports reporter.

I figured that was my way into the game.

Everyone seemed to have a favorite team, but I still didn’t.
Then something happened that finally gave me an opportunity to pick one.

In 1998, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks began play.
When I thought about becoming a sports reporter a few years later, I was presented with an opportunity: Arizona or Tampa Bay.

For me, there really wasn’t much of a decision.

The Devil Rays were a brand-new team, and I figured they would be my team from Day 1.

I got season tickets and began working on covering the team. Baseball wasn’t just something I watched anymore. I was finally getting a chance to be part of it.

I also became the voice of the Clearwater Threshers, the Philadelphia Phillies’ minor league affiliate, which was located near one of the colleges I attended.

For someone who had grown up simply dreaming about baseball, I was suddenly getting opportunities I never thought I’d have.

Then Baseball Took Me to Japan

Eventually, my life took me somewhere I never expected: Japan.

When I arrived, almost everyone I knew was a fan of the Yomiuri Giants. I was back in the same situation I’d been in as a kid—surrounded by people who had their team.

But Japan gave me something else.

I got the opportunity to meet Hideki Matsui before he went to Major League Baseball.

At the time, I couldn’t have known just how big Matsui would become in the United States.
But watching Japanese baseball and eventually seeing players like Matsui and Ichiro make their mark in MLB made the baseball world feel a lot smaller.

My career in Japan took me in another direction as well.
We started and eventually sold a translation company, and the business took off in part because Ichiro had become such a huge star in Major League Baseball.

Baseball seemed to keep finding its way into my life.

Maybe Baseball Did Love Me Back

I never became the great baseball player I dreamed I might be.

I wasn’t a star in Little League. I didn’t spend my life playing professionally.
There were plenty of strikeouts along the way.

But maybe I had been looking at it the wrong way.
Baseball didn’t have to love me back by making me a great player.

It gave me memories.
It gave me opportunities.

It took me from childhood baseball games to the military, from the press box in Tampa Bay to the minor leagues in Clearwater, and eventually all the way to Japan.

I got to see the game from the stands, from the press box and from behind the microphone.
I got to meet players I admired and watch some of the greatest players of their generations.

So, did baseball love me back?

Maybe it did.

Just not in the way I originally imagined.
And after all these years, I’m still watching.

LF Ricky Henderson

I loved stealing bases as a kid and no one did better than Ricky.
His stories of him talking in third person will always entertain me.
He loved the game of baseball with all his heart and it showed in his play.

Rickey Henderson, widely regarded as the greatest leadoff hitter and base stealer in Major League Baseball history, enjoyed a remarkable 25-year career from 1979 to 2003.

Debuting with the Oakland Athletics, he spent the bulk of his prime years there (with multiple stints), while also playing for the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Nicknamed the “Man of Steal,” Henderson holds the all-time MLB records for career stolen bases (1,406) and runs scored (2,295), along with the single-season stolen-base mark of 130 (set in 1982).

A 10-time All-Star, he won the 1990 American League MVP Award, earned two World Series rings (1989 with Oakland and 1993 with Toronto), collected Gold Glove and Silver Slugger honors, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.

I got to meet him while he was playing for the Tokyo Giants.
At the time I didn’t know he was a player and he said he liked to play baseball.
I responded I like to play hockey. He asked what team I play for.
I told him when I was a kid not now.
We were standing in front of a huge poster of himself playing for the Giants and when he pointed at it, I laughed so hard.
He was one of the kindest players I have ever met.

When I was in the Marines I would beat my friends at video game baseball by smashing home runs with Matsui and screaming “Godzilla!!!”

Hideki Matsui, affectionately known as “Godzilla,” built an outstanding baseball career that bridged Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball.
After starring for the Yomiuri Giants from 1993 to 2002—where he became a three-time Central League MVP and one of Japan’s most feared power hitters—he signed with the New York Yankees in 2003 and quickly established himself as a reliable run producer.

Over ten MLB seasons (2003–2012) with the Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, and Tampa Bay Rays, Matsui posted a .282 batting average with 175 home runs and 760 RBIs, earning two All-Star selections and the 2009 World Series MVP Award after delivering a dominant performance that helped the Yankees capture their 27th championship.

His combination of power, consistency, and professionalism made him one of the most successful Japanese position players to cross over to the majors.

I got to interview him a few times when I was a baseball reporter and he was always the coolest guy in the room.
He was fast and had a great swing and is one of the greatest hitters of all time.

We made and sold a sports translation company in Japan based on the popularity of Ichiro.
I will forever be grateful.

Ichiro Suzuki, one of the most iconic and pioneering Japanese players in baseball history, excelled first with the Orix BlueWave in Nippon Professional Baseball from 1992 to 2000—where he won three consecutive Pacific League MVP awards and seven batting titles—before becoming the first Japanese position player to star in Major League Baseball.

Debuting with the Seattle Mariners in 2001 at age 27, he immediately won both the American League Rookie of the Year and MVP awards while hitting .350 with 242 hits and 56 steals.
Over 19 MLB seasons primarily with the Mariners (plus stints with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins), Ichiro compiled a .311 batting average, 3,089 hits, and 509 stolen bases, setting the single-season hits record with 262 in 2004 and recording 10 consecutive 200-hit seasons.

A 10-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, he finished with a combined professional total of 4,367 hits and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025 as the first Japanese-born inductee.

The Tampa Rays are my favorite MLB team and Longo was my favorite player.
I got to see him play in Florida and in the Tokyo Dome.
It was an MLB all star team vs a Japanese All Star Team.

Longo did not start, I cheered with the local fans for the Japanese fans.
I remember telling my friend it was the perfect day except I didn’t get to see Longo.
Then in the last inning he got a pinch hit.
Many of the fans around us didn’t know who Evan Longoria was but we were drinking and cheering all night.
So my whole section of Japanese fans joined in with me and cheered for Longo.
He got a hit and we all went nuts.
Sports bring the best out of all of us.

Evan Longoria, nicknamed “Longo,” enjoyed a distinguished 16-year Major League Baseball career as one of the premier third basemen of his era.
Debuting with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008, he immediately earned American League Rookie of the Year honors and helped lead the franchise to its first World Series appearance that season.

Over a decade with the Rays (2008–2017), Longoria became the face of the organization, setting franchise records for games played, home runs, RBIs, and several other categories while winning three All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves, and a Silver Slugger Award.

He later played for the San Francisco Giants (2018–2022) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2023), appearing in a second World Series with Arizona and finishing his career with a .264 batting average, 342 home runs, and 1,159 RBIs.

Longoria formally retired as a Ray in 2025, and in 2026 the team inducted him into its Hall of Fame while retiring his No. 3 jersey.

SS – Derek Jeter

He wasn’t the best player to play the position but no one ever played the position with more heart.
He played and acted on and off the field like a true Captain.

Derek Jeter, known as “The Captain,” spent his entire 20-year Major League Baseball career (1995–2014) as the iconic shortstop of the New York Yankees, becoming one of the most celebrated players in franchise and baseball history.

Debuting in 1995 and earning the starting job in 1996, he won American League Rookie of the Year honors while helping the Yankees capture their first World Series title in 18 years.

Over two decades, Jeter compiled a .310 batting average with 3,465 hits (sixth all-time), 260 home runs, and 358 stolen bases, earning 14 All-Star selections, five Gold Gloves, and five Silver Slugger Awards.

He is my favorite Bay Star of all time.
I hope to be able to watch his whole career play out in Yokohama.
He is always calm under any pressure or situation.
Whenever he is in the lineup we know we still have a chance to win any game.

Shugo Maki, a dynamic right-handed-hitting infielder for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, has established himself as one of Nippon Professional Baseball’s rising stars since his 2021 debut.

Selected in the second round of the 2020 NPB draft out of Chuo University, the Nagano native quickly made an impact as a rookie by batting .314 with 22 home runs and a Central League-record 35 doubles while becoming the first NPB rookie to hit for the cycle.
Over subsequent seasons he has maintained consistent power and contact, posting multiple 20-plus home run campaigns, earning four consecutive All-Star nods (2022–2025), two Best Nine Awards at second base, and the 2023 Central League hits and RBI titles.

A key contributor to the BayStars’ 2024 Japan Series championship, Maki has also represented Japan on the international stage, helping capture the 2023 World Baseball Classic title.

Growing up my hero in baseball was Donnie Baseball.
I tried my best to try to copy his swing.
As a child I thought he was so cool. Whether playing in a little league or a baseball video game, I would always watch the first pitch like my hero.
When I got my first paycheck from the Marines.
He was the first Jersey I ever bought.

Don Mattingly, affectionately known as “Donnie Baseball,” spent his entire 14-year Major League career (1982–1995) as the premier first baseman of the New York Yankees.

Debuting in 1982, he blossomed into one of the game’s finest hitters and defenders, capturing the 1984 American League batting title with a .343 average and earning the 1985 AL MVP Award after leading the league with 145 RBIs.
A six-time All-Star from 1984 to 1989, Mattingly won a record nine Gold Gloves at first base and three Silver Slugger Awards while compiling a career .307 batting average, 2,153 hits, 222 home runs, and 1,099 RBIs.

Renowned for his exceptional defense, sweet left-handed swing, and consistent production during his peak years, he served as Yankees captain and had his No. 23 retired by the franchise, with a plaque in Monument Park.

C – Shinnosuke Abe

There were so many great catchers in baseball.
It was hard to choose just one.
I thought about Gary Carter, or Mike Piazza, but in the end I went with  Shinnosuke Abe.
He was a tough leader who always found a way to come though in the clutch.
It is sad his managerial career was cut short.
I hope he is in a happy palace because he made so many fans happy with his play.

Shinnosuke Abe spent his entire 19-year Nippon Professional Baseball career (2001–2019) as the standout catcher and longtime captain of the Yomiuri Giants.

Debuting in 2001 after being selected first overall in the 2000 draft out of Chuo University, the left-handed-hitting backstop developed into one of the most productive offensive catchers in NPB history, finishing with a .284 batting average, 2,132 hits, 406 home runs, and 1,285 RBIs.

A three-time Japan Series champion (2002, 2009, 2012), he earned Japan Series MVP honors in 2009 and captured the Central League MVP Award in 2012 after winning the batting title (.340) and RBI crown.

Abe also collected nine Best Nine Awards and four Golden Gloves while serving as team captain from 2007 to 2014, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest catchers in Giants and NPB history before transitioning into coaching and managing the club.

So many great Managers to choose from but growing up it always felt like Lou Piniella had the many answers to all the questions baseball can throw at you.
He cared about his team and wore his heart on his sleeve. He always looked like the type of leader you would go to war for.

Lou Piniella, known as “Sweet Lou,” enjoyed a distinguished 18-year Major League playing career as an outfielder before becoming one of baseball’s most successful managers.
After brief stints with the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians, he broke out with the expansion Kansas City Royals, winning the 1969 American League Rookie of the Year Award.

Traded to the New York Yankees in 1974, he became a key contributor to their late-1970s dynasty, batting .291 over his career with 1,705 hits and earning an All-Star selection in 1972 while helping the Yankees capture World Series titles in 1977 and 1978.

Following his retirement in 1984, Piniella managed the Yankees, Cincinnati Reds (leading them to a 1990 World Series championship), Seattle Mariners (guiding them to a record 116 wins in 2001 and multiple playoff appearances), Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Chicago Cubs, amassing 1,835 victories and three Manager of the Year Awards along the way.

I was always a huge fan of his. I was lucky in life to meet him after his career thanks to all of his hard work for the Asian Ice Hockey League and our Yokohama Grits.

He works as hard off the field as on.
He works for many charities.

Alex Ramírez, nicknamed “Ramichan,” was a Venezuelan outfielder who enjoyed modest success in Major League Baseball before becoming a legendary star in Nippon Professional Baseball.

After brief stints with the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1998 to 2000—where he hit .259 with 12 home runs—he moved to Japan and thrived with the Yakult Swallows (2001–2007), Yomiuri Giants (2008–2011), and Yokohama DeNA BayStars (2012–2013).

Over 13 NPB seasons he compiled a .301 batting average with 2,017 hits (the first foreign-born player to reach that milestone), 380 home runs, and 1,272 RBIs.

A two-time Central League MVP (2008 and 2009), he won multiple batting titles, home-run crowns, and RBI titles while helping capture Japan Series championships in 2001 and 2009.

No athlete in all of sports was more clutch than Mr. October Reggie Jackson.
Growing up he was my hero. He was so cool no matter the circumstance.
As a student I would always wear his jersey when I need to pass any test.

Reggie Jackson, famously known as “Mr. October,” forged a Hall of Fame career as one of baseball’s most clutch and charismatic power hitters over 21 seasons from 1967 to 1987.

Beginning with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, he helped lead the team to three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 to 1974 and won the 1973 American League MVP Award after leading the league in home runs and RBIs.

After a brief stop with the Baltimore Orioles in 1976, Jackson joined the New York Yankees, where he delivered legendary performances—including three consecutive home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series—to secure two more championships (1977–1978) and earn World Series MVP honors.

He later starred with the California Angels before returning to Oakland for a final season.
A 14-time All-Star, Jackson finished his career with a .262 batting average, 2,584 hits, 563 home runs, and 1,702 RBIs, earning induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993.

He was a Philadelphia hero.
I remember at a young age he was retiring and they kept interrupting the Jeopardy TV show because he kept breaking down during his retirement announcement.
I learned at a young age nothing is sadder than when a man has to retire from his dream.

Mike Schmidt, widely regarded as one of the greatest third basemen in baseball history, spent his entire 18-year Major League career (1972–1989) with the Philadelphia Phillies.

A dominant power hitter and elite defender, he led the National League in home runs a record eight times and finished with 548 career homers, 2,234 hits, and 1,595 RBIs while batting .267. Schmidt earned three NL MVP Awards (1980, 1981, and 1986), 12 All-Star selections, 10 Gold Gloves, and six Silver Sluggers.

In 1980 he powered the Phillies to their first World Series championship, earning Series MVP honors after hitting .381 with two home runs.

Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1995, Schmidt had his No. 20 retired by the Phillies and remains the franchise’s all-time leader in several offensive categories.

He is a Hall of Famer but should be in as The first Tampa Bay Ray but MLB didn’t let the man keep his word.
I was lucky enough to be there for Wade Boggs 3,000th career hit in a home game for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was a huge star a new franchise needed.

In the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode “The Gang Beats Boggs,” the characters set out to top Wade Boggs’ legendary beer-drinking mark—variously pegged in the show at 50 to 70 beers on a cross-country flight—while still trying to function the next day.

Boggs himself later clarified the real total was closer to 107 beers across an entire day (pre-flight drinks, the plane ride, layover, and more after landing), with about 73 of them consumed on the flight from Boston to L.A.

The story is rooted in truth: teammates long recounted Boggs’ prodigious tolerance, and the Hall of Famer has confirmed the core of the anecdote, noting he even went 2-for-3 with a couple of doubles the following afternoon.

He was the hardest working athlete in all of pro sports.
He gave it his all on every single play, his love of the game shown every time he was on the field.
There was his ban from baseball.
Even though it broke my heart, I thought it was fair… until the steroid era came and eventually Bud Selig made it into the hall of fame. He was the commissioner who was in charge during the steroid era.
Let him into the Hall of Fame when he obviously knew it was baseball showing how corrupt it truly was. 

Pete Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” remains Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader with 4,256 and one of the most accomplished and controversial figures in the game’s history.

Debuting with the Cincinnati Reds in 1963, he won National League Rookie of the Year honors and spent the bulk of his 24-year career (1963–1986) there, later playing for the Philadelphia Phillies and Montreal Expos before returning to the Reds as player-manager.

A switch-hitter known for his relentless intensity, Rose compiled a .303 batting average, 17 All-Star selections, three batting titles, and the 1973 NL MVP Award while helping win three World Series championships (1975 and 1976 with the Reds, 1980 with the Phillies).

He also earned a World Series MVP in 1975 and set records for games played and at-bats.
Despite his on-field greatness, a lifetime ban for gambling kept him out of the Hall of Fame during his lifetime; after his death in 2024 the ban was lifted in 2025, making him eligible for consideration.

Yoshitomo appears to be the only player to have played for both of my favorite Baseball teams the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB and the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Japan.
I love being able to cheer for him in either of my countries.
Rooting for him in Yokohama is so much fun.
I hope he plays for Yokohama for many more years.

Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, a powerful left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder, has built a notable career primarily with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball.

Drafted first overall in 2009 out of Yokohama High School, he debuted in 2010 and emerged as a star in the mid-2010s, culminating in a dominant 2016 season in which he led the Central League in batting average (.322), home runs (44), and RBIs (110).

Over his NPB tenure he has earned multiple All-Star selections and Best Nine Awards while becoming one of the franchise’s top power hitters.
After posting solid production through 2019, Tsutsugo signed with the Tampa Bay Rays and played three seasons in Major League Baseball (2020–2022) with the Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Pittsburgh Pirates, though he struggled to a .197 average with 18 home runs.

He returned to the BayStars in 2024, contributing to their Japan Series championship that year, and continues to serve as a key veteran presence for the club.

Ohtani is the greatest baseball player of all time. It isn’t even close.
I was lucky to be living in Japan when he was on the Fighters.
My Japanese baseball friends all told me how talented he was.
I got to see him before he took the world and MLB by storm.
Just like Nomo, Ichiro, and Matsui before him, many North American experts said he was overrated, no one is saying that any more.

Shohei Ohtani, widely regarded as the greatest two-way player in baseball history, has redefined the sport since debuting in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Angels in 2018 after starring for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan.

A dominant pitcher and elite power-hitting designated hitter/outfielder, he won the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year Award and claimed four MVP honors (2021 and 2023 in the AL; 2024 and 2025 in the NL).

In 2024 with the Los Angeles Dodgers he achieved the first 50-50 season in MLB history (54 home runs and 59 stolen bases), and in 2025 he helped lead the Dodgers to a World Series title while earning NLCS MVP.

Through mid-2026 he continued excelling as a two-way star, posting elite pitching numbers alongside strong offensive production.
Career highlights include multiple All-Star selections, Silver Slugger Awards, and a combined record of roughly .283 batting average with over 300 home runs as a hitter and a sub-3.00 ERA with hundreds of strikeouts as a pitcher.

Everyone in my neighborhood wanted to be The Rocket.
When we thought fast balls and velocity we thought Roger Clemons.
My cousin and I loved playing his game on SNES.
It wasn’t as good as Ken Griffey Jr.’s baseball, but we played it because he was on the cover.

Roger Clemens, nicknamed “The Rocket,” was one of the most dominant and decorated pitchers in Major League Baseball history across a 24-year career from 1984 to 2007.

Debuting with the Boston Red Sox, he won the 1986 American League MVP Award and Cy Young Award in the same season, then claimed a record seven Cy Young Awards overall.

After starring in Boston, he excelled with the Toronto Blue Jays (winning consecutive pitching Triple Crowns in 1997–1998), New York Yankees (capturing World Series titles in 1999 and 2000), and Houston Astros. Clemens finished with 354 wins, 4,672 strikeouts (third all-time), a 3.12 ERA, and 11 All-Star selections.

Every baseball fan my age grew up loving Nomo and practising his wind up in the back yard.
He is a true baseball pioneer. He risked so much and changed the way baseball and two countries interact with each other.
Without Nomo there is Ichichro, Matsui, Imanaga, Ohtani, Murakami, or any future Japanese baseball stars.

Hideo Nomo, known as “The Tornado” for his distinctive corkscrew delivery, was a pioneering Japanese pitcher who opened the door for modern Japanese stars to succeed in Major League Baseball.

After starring for the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball from 1990 to 1994—where he won the Pacific League MVP, Sawamura Award, Rookie of the Year, and a pitching Triple Crown in his debut season—he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995.
That year he captured National League Rookie of the Year honors, started the All-Star Game, and led the league in strikeouts. Over 13 MLB seasons with the Dodgers and several other teams, Nomo compiled a 123-109 record with a 4.24 ERA and 1,918 strikeouts while throwing two no-hitters, including one at hitter-friendly Coors Field in 1996.

Inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, he remains a trailblazer whose success paved the way for future generations of Japanese players in the majors.

Blake Snell is my favorite Rays Pitcher of all time.
As long as I live the question of would The Rays win the World Series if we kept him in.
We were robbed of that moment and answer.
Later he was stolen from the Padres then to the Dodgers and won many championships thanks to incompetent and cheap GM running the Rays. Being a Rays fan is a pain and for one brief moment we had faith, but it was stolen by a manager and GM that took their pride over the team’s success.

I still remember finding out about the trade while live on Twitch. It destroyed me.

Blake Snell, nicknamed “Snellzilla,” has established himself as one of baseball’s premier left-handed pitchers since debuting with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016.

He broke out in 2018 by winning the American League Cy Young Award after leading the league with a 1.89 ERA and 21 wins. After being traded to the San Diego Padres, Snell claimed his second Cy Young Award in 2023 with a dominant National League-leading 2.25 ERA.

One of the most intimidating pitchers ever.
He is most famous for destroying a bird with his fast ball.
In EA Sports MVP Baseball I used him as a starter and closer, I would put him in the game any chance I had.

Randy Johnson, known as “The Big Unit” for his imposing 6-foot-10 frame, was one of the most intimidating and dominant left-handed pitchers in Major League Baseball history during a 22-year career from 1988 to 2009.

After a brief time with the Montreal Expos, he blossomed with the Seattle Mariners, winning the 1995 American League Cy Young Award.
He then enjoyed a peak with the Arizona Diamondbacks, capturing four consecutive National League Cy Young Awards from 1999 to 2002 and co-earning World Series MVP honors while leading the team to the 2001 championship.

Him coming out of the bullpen was the closest thing to a guaranteed win for the Yankees.
He was a key part to all those championship teams in New York.
