今週、横浜出身の鈴木みのるがプロレスデビュー35周年を迎えました。

「おかげさまで今日デ…」
「お前は何故俺と毎日スパーリングしてるんだ？
いや、あの…先輩に言われたとおりに…
「お前はいったい誰にプロレスを見せてるんだ？
怒鳴り散らされたあの日…
あの日を境に目が覚めた。
デビュー2戦目からは…ロープに飛ばさない、
当然怒られた。「お前のなんかプロレスじゃねぇ」と。
でも胸を張った。オレは間違ってない、
ある日アントニオ猪木さんに呼ばれた。
「おいスズキ、お前のプロレスは他人と違う。
もの凄い鋭い目で、突き刺す様に話してくれた。
それらは20才のスズキ青年の胸にグサッと突き刺さった。

横浜のルーツとアマチュア時代
1968年6月17日——真の横浜っ子がこの世に生を受けました。
鈴木はこの街で育ち、高校時代にはアマチュアレスリングに本格的に取り組みました。
アントニオ猪木に憧れ、自分を鍛え上げることへの強い意志を持った彼は、フリースタイルレスリングで頭角を現していきます。
神奈川県チャンピオンに輝き、全国大会でも準優勝。
オリンピック補欠選手を務めたこともありました。
横浜で培ったガッツと技術的な土台が、その後のすべてを形作っていくことになります。
新日本プロレス道場からMMAの開拓者へ
1988年6月23日、新日本プロレスにてデビュー。
ジュニアヘビー級時代を経て、UWFやプロレスリング藤原組といったシュートスタイル系団体での活動を経た後、1993年に大きな転機が訪れます。
藤原喜明とともに、現代MMAの先駆けとなる総合格闘技団体「パンクラス」を船木誠勝と共同設立。
鈴木はたちまち世界最高峰のファイターの一人へと成長します。
1995年にはキング・オブ・パンクラスのタイトルを獲得し、ケン・シャムロックをサブミッションで2度下したことでも広く知られています。
パンクラスでの活躍はプロレスと実戦格闘技の橋渡し役となり、格闘技界全体に多大な影響を与えました。
プロレス復帰と栄光のチャンピオン街道
2003年、フリーランスとしてプロレスに本格復帰。以来、日本のトップ団体を席巻し続けています。

“My debut match… I went out there, did the usual young boy stuff, and walked to the back feeling pretty damn satisfied with myself. Went around saying my thank-yous — “I made my debut today, sir, thank you very much” — and the last guy I went to was Fujiwara-san.

“Why do you think I’ve been sparring with you every single day?! What the hell have you been doing with everything I’ve taught you?! You’ve got techniques nobody else in this business can do — SO WHY THE HELL WERE YOU OUT THERE DOING THE SAME WRESTLING AS EVERYONE ELSE?!”
I tried to answer — well, the seniors told me to do it that way—
“Who exactly are you showing your wrestling to?! What are you even doing this for?! If you’re out there wrestling just so the seniors won’t yell at you — QUIT. RIGHT NOW. Wrestling is for the fans. You’ve got moves that nobody can do — not them, not even ME — and you’re just gonna keep hiding them?! Do it for the crowd. And anyone who’s got a problem with that? Don’t listen to a damn word they say. Do YOUR wrestling. Nobody else’s. YOURS.”
He screamed at me that day like I’d never been screamed at before.
But that day changed everything.
From my second match on — no more rope running, no lockups, no body slams. None of that. I stripped it all away and started building something from scratch. My own wrestling. Wrestling I figured out myself.
Of course, people came after me. “That’s not pro wrestling.”
But I held my head up. I’m not wrong. This is MY wrestling and nobody else’s.
Then one day, Antonio Inoki called me over.
“Hey, Suzuki. Your wrestling is different from everyone else’s. Good. And if anyone gives you grief about it — blow them away. Blow everyone away in your matches too. Be strong. That’s all that matters. That’s enough.”
He said it with these razor-sharp eyes that cut straight through you.
Those words went right through the chest of a twenty-year-old kid named Suzuki and buried themselves deep.

Yokohama Roots & Amateur BeginningsJune 17, 1968 — a true Yokohama native entered the world.
Suzuki grew up in the city and trained seriously in amateur wrestling during high school.
Inspired by Antonio Inoki and driven to toughen himself up, he became a standout in freestyle wrestling.
He won the Kanagawa Prefecture championship and placed second nationally, even serving as an Olympic alternate.
That Yokohama grit and technical foundation would define everything that came next.
Minoru’s Legacy — From NJPW Dojo to MMA Pioneer
Suzuki debuted in New Japan Pro-Wrestling on June 23, 1988.
After early years in the junior division and shoot-style groups like UWF and Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi, he took a massive leap in 1993.
Together with Masakatsu Funaki, he co-founded Pancrase — one of the very first modern MMA organizations.
Suzuki quickly became one of the best fighters on the planet.
He won the King of Pancrase title in 1995 and famously submitted Ken Shamrock twice.
His Pancrase run helped bridge the gap between pro wrestling and real fighting, influencing the entire combat sports world.
