Mensaba Hamatora — Is This the Second Best Ramen of My Life?
While exploring restaurants in Yokohama, one name kept coming up over and over again — in recommendations, in restaurant guides, everywhere: Mensaba Hamatora.
I usually stick to wandering around the West and East exits of Yokohama Station, so the more refined area just across the bridge was totally uncharted territory for me.
That said, I did try that drink place nearby — the one with the teapot-lid-style bottle — so check out that review too if you haven’t already! ↓

Hamatora is a little far from the station
Head off the main Yokohama Front street and walk down a side road, and you’ll spot it pretty quickly.
It was 4:30 PM — a random, in-between kind of time — and there were already three people lined up outside!
I’d mentally prepared myself for a 30-minute wait, so getting in within about 10 minutes felt like a win.
Before you enter, there’s a ticket vending machine outside where you order.
I picked the Soy Sauce Ramen (醤ラーメン) — the first one that caught my eye — and grabbed a Rich Salt Soba (コク塩そば) for the second bowl since the broth looked noticeably lighter in color.
I also threw in a mini oyako-don-style side dish for good measure.
The staff took our tickets, disappeared inside, and before we knew it we were being guided to a table seat at the back. Smooth and efficient — love that.
Hamatora’s Jasmine Tea
Drinks are self-serve, and their signature jasmine tea is poured into iron cups filled to the brim.
I took a sip while waiting and — oh wow. Ice cold.
The kind of cold that just melts into your body when you’re dragging from the summer heat.
Honestly perfect.
The Soy Sauce Ramen Arrives
It didn’t take long before the soy sauce ramen showed up.

As you can probably tell from the video, the first thing that hit me was just how different this is from your average ramen.
I’m usually a thin noodle person, but the way the fish flavor clung to these curly noodles? No exaggeration — it was a completely new experience for me.
The mini rice bowl side didn’t quite hit as hard as the ramen, but the combo of mayo, egg, and chicken worked really nicely together.
Polished it off in no time.
Then Came the Rich Salt Soba — Plot Twist
While I was still doing my food report, the Rich Salt Soba arrived.
I’m generally more of a tonkotsu person, but one sip and I immediately knew — this one is better for me. ↓

I ended up swapping bowls with BearFriend. 😂
Mental note firmly saved: next time, order the Rich Salt Soba without hesitation.
Final Verdict
I’ll be honest — I’m not exactly a food connoisseur.
But I can say this with full confidence:

Hamatora’s ramen is the second best ramen I’ve ever had in my life.
(First place still goes to Suzukiya! Review coming soon.)
One small regret — I wish there had been a white rice option so I could’ve made the most of that incredible soup. Did they have it and we both missed it…?
Either way, finding a ramen spot I know I’ll be back to — and leaving with a full stomach and a happy heart — made for a pretty great day.
